Alvin Smith, Joseph Smith's older brother, comes into the house in great pain. He is taken sick and dies 18 days later after an "emetic" administered by a local doctor substituting for the family doctor lodges in his digestive tract. This complicates things for Joseph as he claimed he had been instructed by an angel to bring Alvin to the Hill Cumorah to receive the plates.

  3. If Alvin would have lived all the troubles that Joseph got into regarding disobeying the Lord and introducing false doctrines would have never happened. Alvin the oldest brother was always the solid moral example for his younger brothers. But alas, we cannot go back and change the tragedies of history - we can only learn not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

  4. The source for the Nov.15 date is "History of Joseph Smith By His Mother (Revised and Enhanced)", edited by Scot Facer Proctor and Maurine Jensen Proctor, (Bookcraft, 1996), Chapter 19, pp.115-120.
