William A. Hickman tells Mosiah Lyman Hancock, a loyal Mormon, that Brigham Young instructs him to "kill Gentiles [non-Mormons] and take their property for the good of the Church," but Young` denies this to Hancock on 3 July. However, it should be cautioned that if this was taken from Hickman's supposed autobiography, "Brigham Young's Destroying Angel," the inaccuracies have been widely acknowledged. Hickman himself later commented that he had been promised $5,000 from a critic of Brigham Young to write Hickman's autobiography, and that it was a lie "from the wild boar story forward" (Orson Whitney's History of Utah).
