Brigham Young preaches: "When we use the term perfection, it applies to man in his present condition, as well as the heavenly beings. We are now, or may be, as perfect in OUR SPHERE as God and angels are in theirs, but the greatest intelligence in existence can continually ascend to greater heights of perfection."

Steven James Matthew Price formed Affirmation: Gay Mormons United. (Later renamed Affirmation: Gay and Lesbian Mormons.) Members were encouraged to go by a middle name and mother's maiden name to keep their identities secret. (Price went by the name Matthew Price and later by Stephen J. Zacharias.) The mailing list of members was kept in a safe deposit box in Dallas. Within the year membership skyrocketed thanks to coverage in The Advocate. Affirmation marched in a Pride Parade for the first time in 1979 in Los Angeles.

[Conversation with Joseph Fielding Smith:] Pres. Richards also referred to the proposed talks to be given by Brother Skousen on the Church Radio hour, and said the Presidency had wondered a little as to the subject which he has suggested, and were concerned as to whether the missionary momentum gained by Brother David Yarn in his talks might not be lost if Brother Skousen went into a discussion of world problems, as the title indicated he might. Pres. Smith said Brother Skousen had explained he had in mind discussing the Gospel Plan all down through the ages, showing the apostasy from Christianity; but said he would discuss the matter with Brother Skousen, who he felt would be glad to conform to the wishes of the Brethren.

Apostle Grant made brief remarks and showed how the Lord had opened his way for financial relief since he was called to this duty. He was owing over $1,000,000 when he took his departure for Japan and he was now free from this heavy burden. It was marvelous, he said, what the Lord had done for him.

... Br Edward Bunker Sen. and others of Bunkerville, Nevada, had been advancing false doctrine. One item was, that he, Bunker, thought it was right to worship the intelligence that was in God the Eternal Father and not God, who made all things by the power of his Word. And another was that Adam was made of the dust of the earth contained in the Garden of Eden. He had also advanced some erroneous ideas concerning the resurrection. Pres Woodruff and Cannon showed in a very plain manner that it was right to Worship the true, and the Living God, and Him only, and not the intelligence that dwelt in Him; that His Son Jesus Christ, or Jehovah, never taught such doctrine, but always to worship my Father which is in Heaven, and to always pray to the Father in the name of his Son Jesus Christ. Showed that Adam was an immortal being when he came to this earth and was made the same as all other men and Gods are made; and that the seed of man was of the dust of the earth, and that the continuation of the seeds in a glorified state was Eternal Lives. ... Pres Woodruff spoke of the false doctrine taught by Amasa Lyman some years ago, viz, that the Atoning blood of Jesus Christ was of no more efficacy than the blood of any other man or that of a Bullock &c. Such false ideas had led him to apostasy and finally out of the church. Also of the false teachings of the late Orson Pratt, one of the Twelve, arguing that every particle of matter which composed the elements had all the attributes of the Deity in it, and that they, i.e., the particles of Matter, by some unaccountable way united together and became God. Pres Woodruff told of Orson's unyielding stubbornness, and of upbraiding the Twelve for not being manly, for not declaring their views the way he looked at it, and branding them as cowards &c &c. Spoke of the firmness of Pres Young in correcting Orson Pratt and setting him aright; Of Orson wishing to resign his position in the Quorum; of Pres. Young saying "No you wont Orson, I'll rub your ears until I get you right;" and had it not been for firmness of Pres Young in maintaining the right, and assiduously laboring and showing him his gross errors, Orson would have been out of the Church. ...

... this was the first time that I arose to address a congregation of Saints under the British government. I addressed the people from 2nd Cor. IV Ch. 3, 4 verses. The Spirit of the Lord was with us & we were blessed. After I closed, the Saints spake with tongues and prophesyed. ...
I returned with several Elders to Elder Stodards to spend the night & there was a woman present who was possessed with the devil. She was oft times dumb & greatly afflicted by the evil spirits that dwelt in her. She believed in Jesus Christ of Nazareth and us as his servent & called upon us to cast the devil out of her. According to her request four of us lade hands upon her & commanded the devil in the name of JESUS CHRIST to depart out of her & it was immediately done & the woman arose with great joy & gave thanks & prase unto God for according to her faith she was made whole from that hour. A Child also that was sick was made whole by the laying on of hands according to the word of God. See Mark 16 ch 17th.

Despite an extension of time until 10 June 1982, proponents of ERA [the Equal Rights Amendment] could not achieve the necessary thirty-eight state ratifications. National polls consistently showed the majority of Americans in favor of the amendment. However, opponents -- who ranged from the John Birch Society and Phyllis Shafley's STOP ERA, to conservatives throughout the political spectrum of Protestant-Catholic-Mormon-Jews -- combined successfully to defeat the amendment.

Had a long talk with W Avery Chapman about purchasing his farm and closed the deal with him during the day for $20,000. He is to remain on the premises until Ap[ri]l 1. [19]08 under a lease from me. The people of the town are curious and some are quite concerned about our visit. Ashby Snow and German E. Ellsworth were present and indorsed my action as did my wife Lucy W Smith. The property is in good condition and is a beautiful farm. It is where the Father and Son appeared to Joseph [Smith] the Prophet and the Angel Moroni also. Part of the Book of Mormon was translated here. I am not very strong physically.

Pres[iden]t. Geo[rge]. Q. Cannon drew attention to the influence of the sisters in the Church since they had obtained the right of suffrage. This he considered ought not to be left to the manipulation of wicked and designing men, who were opposed to the Priesthood of God. He thought the Apostles should converse with the Presidents of Stakes in relation to this matter. A list of Sisters had been submitted to the Presidency as selections made by the officers of the Relief Society as aids to visit the Sisters of the various Stakes. It was important that only such persons should be selected who have confidence in the Presiding Priesthood and are wiling to receive their counsel. He moved that the brethren in visiting the Conferences investigate the character of those who were at the head of the Relief Societies and Y.L.M.I.A., with a view to the removal of unsuitable persons and the placing in office those who are of the right spirit. The motion was seconded and carried, and Pres[ident]. Woodruff strongly endorsed the remarks of President Cannon.

I called the attention of President Woodruff and the Council to our situation politically at the present time. The bestowal of the franchise on the women [the right to vote] had created a condition of affairs such as has never been before since the organization of the Church. When the women had the franchise in the early days we were a united people on politics. Now we are divided, and every woman that has the franchise is equal to every man in that respect. Our experience, however, during recent elections has proved to us that women, however good their intentions may be, cannot be trusted without someone to guide and influence them. Unworthy men, unscrupulous politicians, have succeeded in leading them off and they have gone to meetings with such characters. There seems to be an immediate necessity of this matter being taken in hand before another election, and that suitable women should be selected to teach the sisters and give them proper views concerning consulting the Priesthood. If women are allowed to act as unwisely as they have done, there is danger that they will fasten fetters upon us. The brethren thought it was necessary that timely action should be taken in relation to this, and the brethren who are going to the conferences were instructed to keep it in mind.

[Joseph F. Smith] Plural wives Levira and Julina apparently got along well personally, but Levira ultimately could not accept plural marriage. After a separation of eight months she obtained permission from Brigham Young to have their marriage dissolved. Levira asked Joseph F.'s permission to keep one letter and picture of him: "They will awaken saddest, sweetest, memories of the past tho the life history of one of earth's poor daughters had been burned to ashes. And why? Because one of earth's brave and noble sons could not appreciate or stoop to the musings of a gentle girlish heart."
