We had a vary interesting report from Br C L Christiansen about the spirit that is working among the Lamanites of Late. He said there was one of the Lamanites that had been visited four different times And the Messenger gave him much valuable instruction and told him that the Mormons were their true friends and that they must listen to their teachings for they were their Brethren and would do them good and tell them what to do. That they had the History of your fathers forefathers.
On one occasion he was shown a large pile of Records and it was told him to Chuse one Book. He told the Messenger He Could not read but reached over and took one Book, and said He would Chuse that one. The Messenger said that was the right one for that was the one that The record of their forefathers that the Mormons had.
At another time He was Shown the Indians & the Mormons and the Devil between them like a great Big Ox or Bull. He was looking, pawing and Bellowing trying to keep the Mormons from the Indians but he Could not do it, for he saw the Mormons and Indians all together and all living as one people. He also saw them rise above their Enemies.

Joseph sends a delegation to Springfield. They call on Gov. Ford to present an affidavit from Joseph. Ford, who interprets the law much more literally than his predecessor, Gov. Carlin, states that in his interpretation the writ against Joseph by Carlin is illegal. Joseph, feeling he can trust Ford not to extradite him (as Carlin had tried to do), now feels free to come out of hiding.

By the fall of 1962 members of the Birch Society's national council and editorial advisory committee had been speakers at BYU's "Forum" assemblies which were attended by a majority of students. This reflected the pro-Birch sentiments of BYU's president. On the other hand, anti- Birchers on the BYU faculty formally complained to Hugh B. Brown that the administration had arranged for national leaders of the Birch Society to address the student body.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints affirmed Wednesday it will not permit posthumous baptisms of any people known to be Jewish, including Holocaust victims, albeit with a minute number of exceptions.
The church's statement came a day after a meeting in New York with Ernest Michel, chairman of the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Victims and himself a Holocaust survivor, to revisit a 1995 agreement discouraging Mormons from submitting the names of deceased Jews to the faith's enormous genealogical database.
According to the 1995 agreement, no deceased Jews, particularly those who perished in the Holocaust, would be the subjects of baptism by proxy, a Mormon temple ordinance intended to offer those in the spirit world the opportunity to embrace the LDS faith.
The exceptions are for Mormons whose direct ancestors were Jewish, or when the immediate family of a deceased Jew agrees to the baptism.

Council Meeting--S.L. Temple Re: Baptism of Negro President[.] Joseph Fielding Smith said that he had received a letter marked personal in which the statement is made that someone had reported to the writer that President McKay had given consent that the temple endowment work be performed for a negro who is dead, and that therefore we were doing work for negroes in the temple. I related the following facts for the information of the Brethren, and said that I felt sure that I had previously brought this matter to the Council. A negro woman had called at the office some few years ago, she having her residency in Ogden. I stated that I think she said she was a Methodist; that her church could not do anything for her husband who was dead, and that before he died he wanted to join our Church; that inasmuch as our Church is the only Church that can do baptismal work for him, and he had requested that she see that his baptism was attended to if he did not recover from his illness, she wanted to have it done. I told her that that could be done. She explained that she knew that he could not receive the Priesthood. She said that the Ward teachers would do the work for him. I said that the thought came to me as to whether they could be baptized for him, and the matter was discussed in Council later. I gave consent for the Ward teacher to be baptized for this negro lady's husband. Now the report comes that the temple work was done for that negro, and therefore he was ordained an Elder. The facts are that the ward teachers were authorized to do baptism work for a colored man who had become converted but died before baptism could be performed, and there is no truth to the statement that he was ordained an Elder or permitted to have his endowments.

The colony of South Carolina passed a "Sunday Law" which required everyone to attend church each Sunday and to refrain from both skilled labor and traveling by horse or wagon beyond what was absolutely necessary. Violators received a fine and/or a two hours in the village stocks.

I had a conversation with my daughter Mary Alice yesterday concerning my son David. It arose in consequence of my looking through his papers and letters, and being alone she said she had had it in her mind to speak to me on the subject of some one taking a wife for David, and she felt that it would be more appropriate for her husband to do so, because there was no woman that she knew that would bear with the patience that she herself would on David's account. She said her love for him was so great that she would willingly have her husband take another wife, if it were permissible, so that David might have children raised to his name. While speaking to me on this subject she wept considerably. I told her I was pleased with the manifestation of love that she exhibited in this case; but to begin with, I did not know that such a thing would be possible under the present circumstances; then again, I scarcely thought it would be appropriate for her husband to perform such a duty as it would be for one of David's own brothers. I felt greatly pleased at this devotion that she exhibited. The love of these children is one of the most delightful things of my life.
