[General] Joseph Smith takes eight-months-pregnant Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner as a plural wife. Mary Elizabeth, age 24, has been legally married to non-Mormon Adam Lightner for over six years at the time. She continues to live with Adam Lightner afterward as instructed by Joseph Smith. Mary Elizabeth later states, "Joseph Said I was his, before I came here. He said all the Devils in Hell should never get me from him."

[see Jan 1, 1862] Church Historian's office notes that Rockwell shoots Huntington eight times in stomach-difficult to do while someone is running away from the shooter. Salt Lake City policemen kill Moroni Clawson and John P. Smith while escorting them to jail on Jan. 17 for the beating. On Jan. 22 bishop's court tries participant Isaac Niebaur who confesses, protests that he "never stole from a Mormon," asks forgiveness, "but if his Blood must atone he is willing to die." The Father frequently came to visit his son Adam, and talked and walked with him; and the children of Adam were more or less acquainted with their Grandfather, and their children were more or less acquainted with their Great-Grandfather; and the things that pertain to God and to heaven were as familiar among mankind, in the first ages of their existence on the earth, as these mountains are to our mountain boys. Richard E. There will be a total of nine or so, Brother Turley said, and projections are to have the rest of them out within the next four years. "We've gathered together a team of people here and at BYU and in the Church Educational System to assist us," he said. He noted that the project makes the Prophet's papers available in book form with maps, notes and other helps."

[General] A week after being baptized Willard Richards writes in his journal: "I partook of the sacrament, and was confirmed by Reynolds Cahoon. I received such a measure of the Spirit as to be sensible of the subject of a song of Zion, which was sung by Elder Lyman Sherman, in the gift of tongues, on the coming of Christ."

[David O. McKay Office Journal] Only one of the Presidency at the office. Heavy mail, and important decisions to render: 1. Question of advisability of urging a Bishop to reconsider refusal to give a recommendation, since the happiness and even the faith of a young girl seemed at stake. Found a satisfactory solution without sacrificing principle.

Historical Note: Section 73, received 10 January 1832, had commanded Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon to resume the translation of the Bible. They had done so. [Joseph Smith Sermon] Joseph the Seer Called upon me & others of the Twelve to attend meeting at his house. We did so in the evening & herd many good principles presented by presidents Joseph & Hyrum Smith such as the following: Speak not in tongues to your own nation but to those of annother tongue. Then if one of another tongue interpets it will be a sign to the unbeliever, & then it would condemn those who heard if they rejected it for the Lord does not work in vain. Joseph spoke upon the 14 ch. 1 cor. Prophesies will cease &c ie. A person will cease or stop prophesying & not continue all the while &c untill we come to perfection or a fulness. Then part work will be done away. [Wilford Woodruff Diary] (3)
