Regarding suggestions that Benson run for President, McKay said "A Just keep on as you are, and we'll wait for the Lord to tell us what the future holds." "A Do not seek the candidacy; let them come to you and if they do, we shall consider it."

At 6 P.M. met with the General Board of the Y.M.M.I.A. at the Presidents office. ... We got along very nicely, until Bro[ther Grant wanted his brother B[righam] F. Grant to be assistant manager of the 'Improvement Era,' and unintentionally said, if I can get him there, the Gen[era]'l Board will find him so useful that they will want him to be one of the General Board. B[righam] F. Grant was a wicked man about a year ago and because he has repented and is a brother to Heber J Grant we have to have him crowded on us, and hear of him on all occasions. My brother Solomon has repented for sixteen years and received no recognition at all.

[Wilford Woodruff]
This was a day of fasting and Prayer with the leaders of the Church. I took a Bath and wash in the Morning and went to the Endowment House at 9 oclok to receive the washing of feet as it was done in Kirtland 47 years ago By the Prophet Joseph Smith as an Initiatory ordinance into the school of the Prophets. Remarks were made By the Presidency & others. President John Taylor washed the feet of Zebedee Coltrin as He was the ownly man living that was in the first school of the Prophets organized by Joseph Smith in Kirtland /in 1833/. Then Zebedee Coultrin washed the feet of Presidet Taylor. Then Presidet Taylor washed the feet of his two Councillors & all the Twelve Apostles except C. C. Rich who was sick & John Henry Smith in England. He washed the feet of 38 in all. At the Close of this Ceremony we partook of Bread & wine as a sacrament as they did in the Temple in Kirtland which Closed the labor of the day.
[Heber J. Grant] At 9 A.M. met as per appointment in the Endowment House with the First Presidency, Twelve, Counselor Wells, Prests of Stakes & 4 others'we had met together fasting and for the purpose of organizing the School of the Prophets'Last evening or this morning all had taken a bath & put on clean cloth garments'excepting Bros Wells and Smoot, they knew nothing of this requirement. Prest Taylor requested them to bathe and change their garments.
[J.D.T. McAllister] President Taylor addressed us on the order of the School of the Prophets, and washed, our feet pronouncing us clean from the blood of this generation and sealing upon us all the rights powers and priveleges associated with this ordinance. we then partook of the Sacrement. bread and wine. enough to eat and drink. He went through the form of receiving the members of the School Himself Counselors G.Q. Cannon J F Smith chosen President. Teacher of the school and assistant retained to Moroni.
[George Q. Cannon diary, Church Historian's Press]: We all met fasting [148 words redacted relating to a sacred ritual]. The spirit of God was powerfully poured out, and all felt subdued and to rejoice. After this ceremony was finished, bread and wine were brought in. Prest. Taylor, myself, and Bro. Joseph F. Smith proceeded to break the bread, dividing a loaf into about three pieces, which Prest. Taylor invoked a blessing upon. Bro. Joseph F. Smith and myself distributed the bread to the brethren. After sitting [and] eating at the bread for a while, we then proceeded to distribute a gallon of wine for those who were present, there being thirty[-]eight of us. This gave each a small wine-glass-ful, upon which, also, President Taylor invoked a blessing. This is a day long to be remembered. I never had such feelings in my life. All felt the power of God to a wonderful extent. We felt linked together in the bonds of love, and that we were brethren united together by the holiest of covenants and the strongest of ties. After having partaken of the sacrament all the brethren withdrew into the celestial room with the exception of Prest. Taylor. We remained there about five minutes to give him time to offer up prayer, and then we proceeded up stairs and he delivered to us the salutation found in section 88 of the Book of Doctrine & Covenants with uplifted hands to heaven, and in response I, in behalf of the brethren, gave him the salutation with all our hands uplifted to heaven; after which we adjourned.

Steve Benson goes public concerning a conversation he had earlier with Apostle Dallin Oaks concerning Apostle Boyd K. Packer contacting Paul Toscano's stake president, Kerry Heinz, concerning Toscano's disciplinary council. Oaks had publicly stated that "if Elder Packer is having any conversation with" President Heinz, "it is contrary to what I know about Elder Packer and how he operates." Benson states that Oaks had previously told him that Packer had contacted Heinz and that, "You can't stage manage a grizzly bear," adding that "it was a mistake for Packer to meet with Heinz and a mistake for Heinz to ask for the meeting."

Brother Garff [of the building commitee] mentioned that ... There are 30%, or 785,000 people who do not have access to a temple. ... Elder Garff said that he felt that what we should do is bring the temple to the additional membership of the Church. He said it was the committee's proposal that we buy a ship and outfit the ship and make it a temple ship and that we take this ship to the ports of the earth where our people are. He said that with a ship we could outfit a temple and take that temple to 30%. Included in the 30% would be people in the United States who are not accessible to the temple and those throughout the world. He said that this could be done for between a million and a half and two million dollars, that a ship could be purchased and remodeled and that we could get the crew and could sail the seas at about a half a million dollars a year. ... He said that such a ship could travel up the Mississippi and the Missouri rivers and that the entire inland part of the United States could be covered. ... He expressed the view that once every year or every eighteen or nineteen months we could touch all of these particular areas with the vessel. ...
Elder [Alvin R.] Dyer mentioned a matter that he said bothered him somewhat[,] and that was [that] in the very early days of the Church the Prophet Joseph had said that the waters would be cursed, that he did not know exactly what that might mean but that we should not be insensible to that. ...
The brethren said that they should not do this at the present time. The brethren were agreed that the matter was deserving of careful consideration.

Q: These interviews are important. In some instances while I was a stake president, applicants became very disturbed about the patriarch's interview and felt he was entitled to inspiration from the Lord. If there is anything to receiving inspiration, it seems to me that a patriarch should be careful of the questions he asks so he does not mislead them. Many times they came to me disturbed about the questions asked by the patriarch.
A: You don't need to question his morality. You can question about his family. If you know all about him, perhaps you don't need to interview him.
... Q: It seems a patriarch might be influenced by some of the answers to the questions.
A: He should be influenced. For instance, a man comes in for a blessing; he comes from the bishop who has given him a recommend for the blessing. That does not prevent the patriarch from asking him about his family or his ancestry. It does not prevent the patriarch from asking, if he holds the priesthood. There are many questions that the patriarch can ask. He doesn't have to quiz him regarding his conduct.

I taught Sister Mary Ann Price Hyde that is was not a sin but a virtue for a man to live with and have children by his plural wife. There was nothing wrong about it only in being caught by the law. A man should be brave enough to run some chances. She acknowledged she had taken the wrong view of it and gladly stood corrected. I did the same for Aunt Bathseba Smith.

"I have heard my grandmother (Mary M[usselman]. Whitmer) say on several occasions that she was shown the plates of the Book of Mormon by an holy angel, whom she always called Brother Nephi. (She undoubtedly refers to Moroni, the angel who had the plates in charge.) It was at the time, she said, when the translation was going on at the house of the elder Peter Whitmer, her husband. ... One evening, when (after having done her usual day's work in the house) she went to the barn to milk the cows, she met a stranger carrying something on his back that looked like a knapsack. At first she was a little afraid of him, but when he spoke to her in a kind, friendly tone, and began to explain to her the nature of the work which was going on in her house, she was filled with unexpressible joy and satisfaction. He then untied his knapsack and showed her a bundle of plates, which in size and appearance corresponded with the description subsequently given by the witness to the Book of Mormon. This strange person turned the leaves of the book of plates over, leaf after leaf, and also showed her the engravings upon them...

[Woodruff account:] Zebedee Coltrin related a vision in the Temple in Kirtland After the school of the Prophets was organized. He said while sitting in Council a personage passed through the room dressed in usual Clothing. Joseph said that was the Savior. Soon another personage passed through the House Clothed in fire. His features & feet were visable but his body was wrapted in flames. Joseph said that was God the Father. He said He was with Joseph & another Man in the woods praying and Heavens was opened and they saw a Man sitting upon a Throne whose hair was white as wool & a woman sitting beside of him Both dressed in white. Joseph said it was Adam & Eve.
[Franklin D. Richards report:] ... in Kirtland [Ohio] in 1833'related visions of Father & the Son appearing to them'of seeing the Heavens opened & with Joseph [Smith] & Oliver [Cowdery] seeing Adam & Eve on a glorious throne also of Reynolds Cahoon transparency [sic?].
[Minutes: School of the Prophets:] Once after returning from a mission, he [Zebedee Coltrin] met Bro. Joseph in Kirtland, who asked him if he did not wish to go with him to a conference at New Portage. The party consisted of Prests. Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, Oliver Cowdery and myself. Next morning at New Portage, he noticed that Joseph seemed to have a far off look in his eyes, or was looking at a distance, and presently he, Joseph, stepped between Brothers Cowdery, and Coltrin and taking them by the arm, said, "lets take a walk." They went to a place where there was some beautiful grass, and grapevines and swampbeech interlaced. President Joseph Smith then said, "Let us pray." They all three prayed in turn--Joseph, Oliver and Zebedee. Bro. Joseph then said, "now brethren we will see some visions." Joseph lay down on the ground on his back and stretched out his arms and the two brethren lay on them. The heavens gradually opened, and they saw a golden throne, on a circular foundation, something like a light house, and on the throne were two aged personages, having white hair, and clothed in white garments. They were the two most beautiful and perfect specimens of mankind he ever saw. Joseph said, They are our first parents, Adam and Eve. Adam was a large broad shouldered man, and Eve as a woman, was as large in proportion.

Pres[ident]. Snow having previously expressed himself to the effect that he felt he should be set apart to preside over the Church, this was now done; ... Pres[ident]. Cannon spoke as follows:
["]Pres[ident]. Lorenzo Snow, we your fellow-servants of the Most High God, possessed of the Apostleship, which you have received through your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, lay our hands upon thy head to bless thee and to set thee apart to preside over the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; that in connection with thy counselors, thou mayest preside over the body of the Church, according to the revelations of the Lord Jesus Christ concerning his Church; and that thou mayest be filled by the power of God, and be entitled to the revelations of the Lord Jesus and give the mind and will of God to the Church; to impart unto them from time to time that knowledge concerning the will of God that shall be communicated to them. And every gift, every grace and qualification that has ever rested down upon a man chosen by the Lord to fill this exalted station, we seal upon thee at this time.
["]We reconfirm upon thee all thy former blessings, and all the powers and the authority and ordinations; and every power that pertains to the everlasting Priesthood and to the Presidency of the Church of Christ, we seal upon thee, and ask God our Father to confirm this sealing and this setting apart, that thou mayest be filled with the new power, yea with increased power, to go forth and magnify thy calling in the midst of the Church of Christ and among thy fellow-servants; and that the Lord will communicate with thee from time to time everything necessary for the perfect government of his Church; that thou mayest exercise all the keys and the authority that have been exercised heretofore by thy predecessors--by Wilford Woodruff, by John Taylor, by Brigham Young, and by Joseph Smith, and which he (Joseph Smith) sealed upon his fellow-Apostles.
["]We pray thee, O God our Eternal Father, to hear us thy servants and to look at our hearts and our desires and forgive our feebleness and imperfections; for we desire to bless this thy servant with every blessing that we have authority to invoke in his behalf, and we humbly ask thee to confirm this blessing upon his head, and to fill him with thy power from the crown of his head to the soles of his feet; that he may be set apart to this important office and
exercise all its functions to thine acceptance and to the satisfaction of his fellow-servants and of thy Saints.
["]All these blessings, Father, we seal upon him; and we say unto thee, Brother Lorenzo, receive thou the same, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the authority of the Holy Apostleship, which we hold, even so, Amen.["] ...

[George Q. Cannon] urged the brethren not to become heated in politics, but to be calm in all they do. ...
He believes the time will come when marriages will occur in our temples under the Aaronic Priesthood, instead of giving to young and inexperienced men all the blessings belonging to the Higher Priesthood. It is frequently the case now that unworthy persons go into the temples on recommends, which they should not receive, but it cannot well be prohibited them to enter, because of their family connections. ...
Men should not sell their honor, their wife's virtue or their inheritances. We should hold all of these sacred.

Gusta, my cousin Anthony W. Ivins and I chatted until 1115. Speaking of plural marriage he said there were quite a number of them being performed in Mexico. Said he was on hand and willing to take another wife if his brethren felt that it was the wisest thing to do under all the circumstances. He had no desire for another wife, but at the same time had a strong desire to [not] to fail in doing any duty devolving upon him and he wanted me and my fellow apostles to know that he was on hand to perform any and every duty required of him.
Had all his life accepted in his heart of plural marriage and was making an effort to get another wife when the Manifesto came along.
I was glad to have him say this much.

An arsonist set fire to the Temple. The Keoukuk Register reported that "Great volumes of smoke and flames burst from the windows, and the crash of falling timbers was distinctly heard on the opposite side of the [Mississippi] river. The interior of the building was like a furnace, the walls of solid masonry were heated throughout and cracked by the intense heat. The melted zinc and lead were dropping from its high block during the day." ...
Brigham Young later said of the arson, "I hoped to see it burned before I left, but I did not. I was glad when I heard of its being destroyed by fire, and of the walls having fallen in, and said, 'Hell, you cannot now occupy it.'"

Could you gaze in[to] heaven 5 minutes you would know more than you possibly /would/ can know by read[ing] all that ever was written on the subject. We are one [and all] only capable of comprehending that certain things exist which we may acquire by certain fixed principles. ... The spirits of just men are made ministering servants to those who are sealed unto life eternal. It is through them that the sealing power comes down.
The spirit of Patriarch Adam now is /one of/ the spirits of the just men made [perfect] and if revealed now, must be revealed in fire. ...
Flesh and blood cannot go there but flesh and bones quickened by the Spirit of God can. If we would be sober and watch in fasting and prayer, God would turn away sickness from our midst, Hasten the work of the Temple, and all the work of the Last Days. Let the Elders and Saints do away [with] light mindedness and be sober.

Pres. [Joseph F.] Smith withdrew with his counselors after instructing Elder Jno. H. Smith to deliver the charge to the new apostle. Elder Jno. H. Smith, addressing Elder Geo. A. Smith, said in part. You should understand that you are now wedded to a tie stronger than life or death. You are subject to the counsel and direction of the Presidency and your quorum, and your field of action is the whole world. You are to attend your quorum meetings regularly. It is presumed that you accept all the principles of the gospel and that you accept and sustain with your whole soul the First Presidency as now organized, and that you accept and sustain Francis M. Lyman as president of the quorum of the Twelve with the members thereof. You are to respond to the calls of the Presidency though it should take you from a sickbed, though it should cost you your life. The obligation is placed upon you to express when called upon clearly and boldly your views even though you may differ with your brethren, but you must in all cases submit to the decisions and judgment of your quorum. It is your duty to preach the gospel and lead an exemplary life. It is your duty to serve God and fear no man.

At the request of Prest. [Lorenzo] Snow, the Apostles handed to him suggestions of brethren whom they would like to be chosen to fill the vacancy in the quorum of the Apostles. Prest. Snow and his Counselors then withdrew to consider the names. After their return I (Heber J. Grant) have recorded in my journal the following:
... Said: I know that we have the mind of the Lord, and I know it just as perfectly as I have ever Known anything. The man we have chosen, and upon whom we are perfectly united, is Rudger Clawson. Prest. Franklin D. Richards moved that we sustain the choice of the Presidency and the motion was unanimously sustained.
Prest. Snow then said he wanted to say something about Rudger Clawson. Said that when he was in the Penitentiary he became intimately acquainted with Bro. Clawson and learned his worth. ... When Bro. Standing was killed the man in charge of the mob ordered them to turn their guns on Bro. Clawson and fire. Bro. Clawson closed his eyes and waited for a moment or two, expecting to have the bullets of the assassins crash through his brain. When they did not fire, he opened his eyes and saw the guns were still pointing at him, but the leader countermanded the order to fire.
Brother Clawson during his long confinement in the "Pen" (3 yrs., I mo., 10 days) for plural marriage made a good record. ...

Yesterday morning I made it a subject of prayer as to who I should endeavor to secure for a second wife I felt that the time had come when I should again make an attempt to practice plural marriage.
I wrote a number of names on pieces of paper and on one 'neither'. I put the papers in my pocket and prayed earnestly th to my Heavenly Father that I might draw the paper from my pocket with the name of the Sister on it that He desired me to try and secure for a second wife and provided He did not wish me to try to get either of the persons whose names I had written I asked that I might draw the name paper with 'neither' written on it'I drew the paper with 'Miss Winters' on it 'Miss Winters is almost a stranger to me' I simply know her enough to speak when we meet, but my slight acquaintance has been enough to make me think her just such a person as I should like for a wife.

President Brigham Young pronounced the following benediction: According to the authority of the Holy Priesthood vested in me, I bless this congregation in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the brethren, my counselors, and the Apostles, with all the officers of the Church and Kingdom of God. ... I bless you, my brethren and sisters, and all that pertain to you. And I bless the human family according to the authority that the Lord has bestowed upon me; and if it would do any good, I would ask the Father in the name of Jesus to make them honest, and to open their eyes and their ears and their hearts to receive the truth, that they might be messengers of salvation upon the earth and be prepared for a glorious resurrection. But they are as they are, and I bless them and pray that the Lord will bless them and have com- passion upon them who have not sinned against the Holy Ghost, that they may be saved in the kingdom or kingdoms of our God. You are dismissed. -- SLC Tabernacle

Spirits can only be revealed in flaming fire or glory. Angels have advanced further, their light and glory being tabernacled; and hence they appear in bodily shape. The spirits of just men are made ministering servants to those who are sealed unto life eternal, and it is through them that the sealing power comes down.
Patriarch Adams is now one of the spirits of the just men made perfect; and if revealed now, must be revealed in fire; and the glory could not be endured. Jesus showed Himself to His disciples, and they thought it was His spirit, and they were afraid to approach His spirit. Angels have advanced higher in knowledge and power than spirits.

In the first place I will say to the saints that I know more about Joseph Smith, the prophet of the last days, and his family, than all the apostates that ever did or ever will leave this church. ... Joseph Smith [III] that now is living in the state of Illinois, the son of Joseph the Prophet, will never lead the Latter-day Saints; he may lead apostates, and will lead them to hell. ... Long before his death Joseph said to me, '"I shall have a son born to me and his name shall be called David; and on him in some future time will rest the responsibility that now rests upon me.'" This is Joseph's declaration to me and others some time before his death. ... There is now considerable whispering among us concerning the Josephites as they are called. What are they? They are apostates. Their preaching is scurrility and abuse and calling me the worst man in the world. ...

A special conference is held in Nauvoo. Joseph addresses the congregation to try to convince them that he is dissatisfied with Sidney Rigdon as counselor, and that he thinks Sidney has done a poor job in the management of the post office, has had secret connections with John C. Bennett, and conspired with ex-Gov. Carlin when Joseph was arrested and almost taken back to Missouri on June 23. Joseph says the rift between himself and Sidney has grown too wide, and he does not want him as his counselor anymore. Sidney Rigdon then stands and pleads his case in a highly emotional manner, claiming that he is innocent of any ill feelings toward Joseph, and has never conspired with either John C. Bennett or Gov. Carlin. The weather deteriorates and the meeting is adjourned until the next day, Oct. 8, when Rigdon continues his appeal, listing the many sufferings and trying experiences he and Joseph have gone through together throughout the history of the Church. Elder Almon W. Babbittand Joseph's second counselor, William Law, each speak in defense of Rigdon. Hyrum Smith also asks for mercy for Rigdon. Hyrum Smith seconds a motion by stake president William Marks that Sidney Rigdon be retained as counselor in the First Presidency. It is passed in spite of Joseph's objections. Joseph rises and says, "I have thrown him off my shoulders, and you have again put him on me. You may carry him, but I will not."

I confess myself to be among that number. Bro[ther]. Jos[eph]. F. just placed his son Hyrum in the Apostleship, and to fill another vacancy with a Smith to me, was 'too much Johnson'. The president of his church has the right to do this, and God consents to it, but I question very much whether He approved of it. It is nepotism of the strongest kind since the days of President Brigham Young. The evil effects of family favoritism will be felt among many of our young people and there will be a falling away on account of these things. I confess that I am affected and can see the necessity of not trusting in man. Fathers family is entitled to recognition and the people or many of them feel the same way. We have boys just as good as Geo[rge]. A[lbert]. Smith and very much superior in many ways. From now on a man must be a Smith to get preferment.

The 13th Amendment legally ends slavery everywhere in the United States in 1865. ...
There are some of the sealing ordinances that cannot be administered in the house [Endowment House] that we are now using; we can only administer in it some of the first ordinances of the Priesthood pertaining to the endowment. There are more advanced ordinances that cannot be administered there; we would, therefore, like a Temple, but I am willing to wait a few years for it. I want to see the Temple built in a manner that it will endure through the Millennium. This is not the only Temple we shall build; There will be hundreds of them built and dedicated to the Lord. This Temple [in Salt Lake City] will be known as the first Temple built in the mountains by the Latter-day Saints. And when the Millennium is over, and all the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve, down to the last of their posterity, who come within the reach of the clemency of the Gospel, have been redeemed in hundreds of Temples through the administration of their children as proxies for them, I want that Temple still to stand as a proud monument of the faith, perseverance and industry of the Saints of God in the mountains, in the nineteenth century.

During this conference, also, Elder Sidney Rigdon was tried for his fellowship, charged with a long course of conduct which rendered him unworthy of a place in the Church. President Joseph told the Saints that he had carried Elder Rigdon long enough and that he should do so no more. But notwithstanding this, the Patriarch Hyrum pleaded for mercy in Sidney's behalf; and the conference voted to sustain Elder Rigdon in his position as counsellor to the First Presidency.

For those who do not own their own temple clothing, a substantial discount was to be provided to help members in acquiring their first set of temple clothing. These materials replace all previous sewing patterns and instructions given to relief Society presidents. The sewing of temple clothing was to be done only by endowed members under the direction of the local Relief Society presidents.

Bro[ther] Jno. H. Smith came for me to attend a special meeting of Council with our lawyers at His office. The point in question, Shall we repudiate plural marriage to save the half Million dollars the U S. has seized or, give them pretext to seize it as fund which sustains polygamy. Every fiber in my body cried out, "we will sacrifice no principle to save property or life itself, God being our helper." I let others do the talking. So long as they go right I am satisfied, I would rather reach the point by much thinking than much talking, the younger members of our Quorum seem to think otherwise. Decided to let the lawyers do the best they could and we retain our honor before men, and our integrity to God.

Concerning "the doctrine of plurality of wives," Smith's manuscript diary reads: "Joseph forbids it and the practice thereof. No man shall have but one wife." History of the Church, 6:46 makes an addition which reverses this absolute denial.

Immediately after [Hugh B.] Brown was sustained as first counselor, Benson's conference sermon relayed a covert subtext to both supporters and detractors. On the surface, the talk referred to the excommunication of early church leaders and warned of the need to detect error today: "For even the Master followed the will of the Father by selecting Judas." In warning current Mormons not to be deceived, Benson quoted Brigham Young against deception by persons "speaking in the most winning tone, attended with the most graceful attitudes." Benson warned against those who "support in any way any organization, cause or measure which, in its remotest effect, would jeopardize free agency, whether it be in politics, government, religion, employment, education, or any other field." He then concluded with a long plea against the threats of socialism and Communism.
BYU's Ernest Wilkinson felt that the "Judas" reference specifically referred to Benson's "running controversy with President Brown." Brown was known as one of the most eloquent speakers in the church and as a defender of liberalism and socialism. Brown also recognized Benson's subtext. "I don't think I'm going to be excommunicated," the new first counselor told Wilkinson right after the conference session ended. Wilkinson saw Benson's October 1963 talk as further evidence of the animosity between Brown and Benson. "The feeling is very intense between them," BYU's president recorded; Brown wrote of being "surrounded by enemies or opponents."

There are men among us who would go in direct opposition to what the wishes of the Presidency were politically if they should learn their wishes, and yet these men claim to be in fellowship in the Church. I feel that such men are sure to lose the faith unless they repent and change their course of action. [Apostle] Marriner W. Merrill Expressed himself freely on political matters and said that while it might not be a wise thing to publicly say it yet, in his opinion it was the right of the Presidency of the Church to express their opinions on all matters, political as well as religious and what he wanted to know is what the Presidency desire and then he wanted to do it, and was only too willing to lay aside his own feelings if they were not in harmony with the feelings of the apostles.

... And when a man takes a wife they enter this sacred order and covenant to observe all the rites in this. The man covenants to take more wives, the woman covenants to do the part of Sarah and gives her consent for him to take more wives. Hoped the young people would understand these things. A covenant not kept is a covenant broken. When we enter that covenant we must continue in it. Still there is no one here who will say you shall take more wives, that is left entirely with yourselves. Said we ought to express ourselves freely upon these things here for no one dare say any thing about them on the outside of this house. You take upon yourselves covenants to not speak outside of what takes place here. It is a grand thing to have a little common sense to guide us in these things.

While ill at home, President Joseph F. Smith began pondering the mission of Christ to those who were dead, particularly as considered in I Peter 3: 18-20 and 4:6. "As I pondered over these things," he wrote, "the eyes of my understanding were opened, and the Spirit of the Lord rested upon me, and I saw the hosts of the dead, both small and great." These spirits of faithful men and women met with Christ, and Christ organized them to carry the missionary work to the spirits in prison. In addition, Christ ministered unto these people and "gave them power to come forth, after his resurrection from the dead, to enter into his Father's kingdom." On Oct 31, 1918, Joseph Fielding Smith brings the revelation to the Twelve. He reads it to the council, and the apostles "accepted it as true and from God." During the presidency of Spencer W. Kimball, this revelation is added to the church's Doctrine and Covenants as Section 138.

At 8 a.m. attended a meeting of the Apostles in the Temple. ... The letter of Brother B. H. Roberts written to Brother [Richard R.] Lyman was read. The brethren were united in their feeling that Brother Robert's letter was entirely uncalled for, and that it would give comfort to the enemies of our people. None of the brethren had the least objections to Brother Roberts' working for the Democratic party, but we felt that he could do this without making an attack upon one of the Church officials [Apostle and Senator Reed Smoot]. The general feeling was that after having run for Congress himself twice, that it came with very poor grace for him to take the position that no high church official should hold any high office politically.

I learned over the weekend that President Kimball had told his son Edward [L. Kimball] when he was working on the biography of President Kimball that he should get it out quickly, and the reason President Kimball gave was that he thought he should get it out while Pres. Kimball was still alive so that it would sell well. President Kimball told Edward that he had never gotten into a position where he had made enough to leave anything to the family, and so in the interests of the family having something to work with, he encouraged them to get the book out, as it would surely bring them some income. I have been told by Lowell Durham that 60,000 copies were sold within six months after the book was published, so the book should have brought an income of maybe $30,000 or $40,000 to the family.

He said that the legislature set apart a day on which the State should vote for State-wide prohibition, and he recommended that this plan be followed in Utah, as in that event partisan politics would not be involved in the issue, and besides, it would be the means of brining out the strength of the temperance people, and he believed that seventy per cent of the people of Utah would vote for prohibition. ...

. . . "When Joseph Smith," says our informant, "was digging for the Golden Bible, he ran short of provisions, and in order to obtain some mutton from a somewhat simple-minded neighbor, Joseph prevailed on him to furnish a fat sheep, the best he had[,] to be offered as a sacrifice to God. The farmer who at first appeared unwilling, at last consented, and consequently the sheep was brought into a shed back of the Smith family residence. (By the way the identical hill was pointed out to us). But while the Prophet was going through a lengthy ceremony preparatory to offering the sacrifice, one of his boys, as previously arranged carried off the sheep, weighing 200 pounds which was needed by the family for food."
If one of the Prophet Joseph Smith's boys (his eldest son being born in 1832) could carry off a sheep weighing 200 pounds as early as 1827, five years before birth, it is no wonder that Joseph Smith has made such a great stir in the world. This is a fair specimen of several other stories put in circulation about Joseph Smith and the "Mormons."

We do not really have a president of the church now; he cannot function physically or mentally. [[Ezra Taft Benson, who became president in 1985, suffered a stroke three years later and was unable to function. Day-to-day church governance fell to his counselors.]] Historically, we have had years when the president was physically and mentally incapacitated. The last years of Heber J. Grant, David O. McKay, Joseph Fielding Smith, Spencer W. Kimball, and now President [Ezra Taft] Benson. During those years the counselors run things. J. Reuben Clark, Jr. was dominant during the last Grant years; Clare Middlemiss during the final McKay years; Harold B. Lee and [N.] Eldon Tanner during the Joseph Fielding Smith years, Gordon Hinckley during the last Kimball years. Right now the most outspoken apostle seems to be Boyd Packer, who seems to want to purge the church of outspoken feminists and intellectuals. My own view is that they have gone over the line and the Church will tarnish its image of being compassionate, encouraging scholarship, and living with diversity. We do know some general authorities who were devastated by the actions against Paul [Toscano] and Lavina [Fielding Anderson], but they were only Seventies and not in a position to do anything. When we've had a president that was fully functioning, he has taken a balanced and kind-hearted approach. President McKay, for example, preventing a trial for the membership of Sterling McMurrin. President Kimball, for example, supporting our historians, as did Harold B. Lee. Those who support the intellectuals seem not to find the energy to counter [Ezra Taft Benson's assistant] Bill Nelson, Boyd Packer, and Loren Dunn. [[Dunn, a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy, was the area director for Utah, where all of the September Six lived. He was also executive director of the Historical Department, 1991-93, 1999-2000.]]

[Ezra Taft Benson]
This of all days is the most significant in my life. I shall never forget it. In the opening session of the 114th Semi-Annual [General] Conference I was sustained as the youngest and junior member of the Quorum of Twelve [Apostles] and called upon to address the great conference of stake and ward officers of the Priesthood. ...
Bro. Kimball and I received some valuable instructions from Pres. George Albert Smith regarding our duties. Among other things he urged to us to maintain and continue our contacts with people outside the Church in an official and semi-official capacity as an important part of our work as missionaries and special witnesses of the Lord. He encouraged us not to write our talks unless on a radio program which requires a manuscript. In so advising us he stated he was but repeating the admonition of Pres. Grant to give the Spirit an opportunity to operate. He said some of the brethren have somewhat formed the habit of writing their talks and were finding it difficult to do otherwise. ...

[Rudger Clawson speaking:] Related a circumstance which occurred in the St. John [Arizona/New Mexico] Stake which had made quite an impression upon his mind. A very interesting and impressive conversation had been had by Bro[ther]. [Joseph W.] McMurrin with a very intelligent, pretty young lady of eighteen or nineteen years of age, who was coming to Utah to attend one of the Church Colleges. The conversation drifted upon the subject of plural marriage and this young lady assured Bro[ther]. McMurrin that she and her associates had been talking over the principle of plural marriage and they had unanimously agreed that they would prefer, providing the privilege were given to them, to marry a man who had one or more wives and who had proven himself to be a faithful husband than to marry a young man who was not married and had not been tested, as they felt they would be taking greater chances by marrying the latter. Bro[ther]. McMurrin said to the young lady, I am afraid you do not know what you are talking about. You certainly have not taken into account the fact that you would be looked down upon and ostracized from the world, would be called upon to make very many sacrifices and have to go perhaps to a foreig[n] land and might not see your husband only once in a very great while. The young lady answered that she and her friends had thought of all this and not with standing the trial incident to plural marriage, if they could become the wife of a tried and true Latter-day Saint they would be glad to do so. Brother Clawson rejoiced to find this spirit among the young ladies in Arizona and felt that such a spirit would bring the people nearer to the Lord.

The Church has been paying me $500.00 per year in produce for my services as president of the Stake. It was decided on motion of Pres. Jos. F. Smith that 25 per cent of this amount be paid in cash or mds.
When I went to Mexico I loaned the Church $10000.00 at 10 per cent interest. ...
Bishop Preston said one fourth of the Latterday Saints pay no tithing at all and many who have their names on the roll do not pay one fourth of what they should.
. . .John W. Taylor suggested that surplus property be consecrated to the Church to pay its debts.
M. W. Merrill said non tithe payers were on the increase. This meeting has been called that there may be a reformation.
... Heber J. Grant had always paid his tithing with pleasure. Two dollars is spent in breaking the Word of Wisdom for every dollar paid in tithing.
Sacrement was administered by Bishops Preston and Burton.
Pres. Snow ... The man who fails to pay his tithing hereafter I could not recommend to the House of the Lord. ... The Lord will send Cyclones, Whirlwinds and devouring fire and the way will be prepared for the fulfilment of His purposes. ...
Pres. Jos. F. Smith read from the Bible. God once cleansed the earth with water. He will cleanse it with fire. Just as sure as we live, just as sure as you hear the sound of my voice, unless we honor this law of tithing we shall never get back to Jackson County unless we go there as Ancient Israel wint into the Promised Land, by the shedding of blood. ...
Francis M. Lyman. There has never before been just such a gathering. It has fallen to the lot of Pres. Snow to announce that the time has come when the law of ;tithing must be observed in Zion. ... The time approaches when Zion is to be redeemed and the Temple built under the law of consecration. ...
George Q. Cannon. There are men in this congregation who are descendents of the ancient Twelve Apostles, and I shall say it, of the Son of God himself, for he had seed, and in the time right they shall be known. ...
Pres. Snow asked all who endorsed it to arise and with the right hand raised to say aye. The response was unanimous. The entire body of priesthood joined in shouting hosanna, sany the Soxology and were dismissed by Seymour B. Young.

"In the fall of 1843 I went to Nauvoo to buy calves, and called on a blindman who had one to sell. I bought his calf, and being curious to learn his history, went in and saw his wife, with two little twin infants in a cradle, and great destitution. He told me that he had a nice home in Massachusetts, which gave them a good support. But one of the Mormon elders preaching in that country called on him and told him if he would sell out and go to Nauvoo, the prophet would open his eyes and restore his sight. And he sold out, and had come to the city, and had spent all his means, and was now in great need. I asked why the prophet did not open his eyes. He replied that Joseph had informed him that he could not open his eyes until the temple was finished, and then when the temple was finished he would open them, and he should see better than before! And he believed, and was waiting patiently for the last stroke to bemade on the temple." [I. R. Tull, Esq., of Pontoosue]
