I rise to make a few remarks, to satisfy the feelings of the people and correct their minds and judgment. You have heard concerning the sufferings of the people in the handcart trains. ... Count the living and the dead, and you will find that not half the number died in brother Willie's handcart company, in proportion to the number in that company, as have died in past seasons by the cholera in single companies travelling with wagons and oxen, with carriages and horses, and that too in the forepart of the season. ... they have not suffered one hundredth part so much as did our brethren and sisters who have died with the cholera. Some of those who have died in the hand-cart companies this season, I am told, would be singing, and, before the tune was done, would drop over and breathe their last; and others would die while eating, and with a piece of bread in their hands. I should be pleased when the time comes, if we could all depart from this life as easily as did those our brethren and sisters. I repeat, it will be a happy circumstance, when death overtakes me, if I am privileged to die without a groan or struggle, while yet retaining a good appetite for food. I speak of these things, to forestall indulgence in a misplaced sympathy. ...

Visited the big bone lick in Boone County KY. which is the Place Whare those large bones of enormous size were dug from the earth & have been exhibited in many Parts of America & Europe. It is conjectured that those animals while in the lick got mired & Perished. It is said or judged from the measurment of those bones that the animal was 36 feet in length & 15 in highth. No record yet gives us an account of those animals. Will not some record of the Nephites yet tell us?

Several years ago Duane was called in about something he had written about the publication of the Earth and Man by James E. Talmage. Seems that Joseph Fielding Smith had published that this was published by violating instruction from the First Presidency, and that in no sense was it published with Church approval or permission. Joseph Fielding had pulled out of the files a letter signed by J. Reuben Clark and his associates in the First Presidency which reviewed events connected with the publication of that paper and saying that it was published specifically without their approval. And yet it was obvious that Talmage would not have published it without their approval. How explain? Duane got approval from someone (I assume Don Schmidt but not sure) to examine the papers of Heber J. Grant and found that on a certain day there is an entry in his diary which says that he and other members of the First Presidency had met with Elder [James E.] Talmage, reviewed the paper, and gave explicit approval to its publication. How explain the later letter? It is obviously something Joseph Fielding had gotten J. Reuben Clark to do. He had written the letter and got others to sign it without fully informing them of its nature and importance. Anyway, Duane is about to publish, I think in Dialogue, this matter, so that the Earth and Man is no longer under a cloud.
Max Parkin told me the best population estimates [of Mormons in Missouri] are by Milt Backman or Lyndon Cook.61 I telephoned Lyndon and he said the number of LDS in Missouri in 1838 was about eight thousand. Evidence suggests that about 6,500 left Missouri for Illinois. He suggests about two to three thousand settled around Quincy [Illinois] for a temporary period. He says our previous estimates have been too high.

The Prophet said that the practice of this principle would be the hardest trial the Saints would ever have to test their faith. It was not his work, but that of the Almighty, and he said it would cause the damnation of all who entered into it with impure motives, and none who acted unrighteously could stand, the trial would be so great; and there would be but few men who would be capable of being saviors upon Mount Zion.
He taught the principle to his wife, Emma, who humbly received it and gave to him three young women to wife, who had been living with her in her family, and had been like adopted daughters. Until she lost the spirit and her heart became hardened, they lived happily together. They respected and loved her as though she had been their mother, and might have remainded with her afterwards had they been willing to have severed the ties between themselves and the Prophet; but choosing to remain true to their covenants, which they considered binding here and hereafter, they preferred to leave the Mansion.
Emma deceived her children and denied to everyone that the Prophet had ever received a revelation on celestial marriage, or had ever practiced it, although she had heard the revelation and was an eye witness to the marriage of the three wives above mentioned. Besides, he told her of every one that had been sealed to him.
Some of those who apostatized from the Church, and knew more than she did about the practice of polygamy, also denied it; but there are too many of the Prophet's wives still living in Utah—as well as hundreds of other witnesses—who can testify to the hypocrisy of those men who, like William Marks, apostatized because they could not manage matters pertaining to the Church as they desired, and who afterwards volunteered their services to help Emma Smith, she having, according to her own acknowledgment, founded the Josephite church to revenge herself upon Brigham Young.
... My father was often called a prophet, and years ago in Nauvoo I heard him predict that it would yet become a law of this nation that men should marry a plurality of wives.

Shortly after D&C 1 is given, there is some question and criticism about the language in the revelations, and Joseph receives D&C 67. In it, the Lord bears witness that the revelations are from him, and challenges the wisest among the elders to write a revelation on his own to see if he can duplicate Joseph's ability. After this revelation is received, McLellin tries to write a commandment but fails. Joseph records, "It was an awful responsibility to write in the name of the Lord." After this episode, the faith of the elders is increased, and they draw up a testimony to Joseph's revelations, which can be seen in D&C, p. iv. (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 1:226.) Four elders inquire of Joseph the mind of the Lord concerning them, and he receives D&C 68.

Met this morning at 8:00 o'clock with the Friday morning welfare meeting. At this meeting was President Clark. He broke into the business of the meeting stating that he was trying to keep
himself form getting excited but while he might forgive he could not forget that under the leadership of a group of men who had no concern for the future of our people, Salt Lake City was becoming the center of one of the most heavily fortified areas in the United States, 'Fort Douglas on the east, the Ordnance Plant west of the city, the bombing fields our west of Tooele, and now the government is talking of putting $24,000,000 in igloos for the storing of ammunition near the airport.
He remarked that this group was headed by the Governor, H. B. Maw. He further stated that he could not help but feel that we are facing difficult times, that it looked very much like the President was going to take over all key industries in the country and he, President Clark, had a feeling that labor was cooperating by creating situations which seem to force the President's hand. The advice given in this meeting was that we urge our people to stay on their farms and in their permanent jobs and not to flock to defense industries for work.

A question arose as to the distribution of the 10% allowed bishops for the handling of tithes in the stakes of Zion, and it was decided by unanimous vote that the distribution be made by the presidency of each stake, associated with the bishops.
Pres. Smith directed attention to the necessity of taking some steps, looking to the revision and publication of the Book of Mormon in the Hawaiian language, and also suggested that the Book of Mormon be published in the Tahitian language as soon as someone was found who could do this work properly. The views of Pres. Smith were adopted by unanimous vote.

Wrote A[ngus]. M. Cannon stated I thought the first wives should join the plural wives, who were thrown out by the cursed laws of the U.S.A. Congress, and force their husbands to keep the law where they had promised to obey us. I believe the women should all band together and reject the secular and cling to the eternal laws of God. What right has a first wife to enjoy all the blessings when her sisters who have suffered and ventured as much as she, are wickedly thrust out from all rights of wives & mothers given them of their Father who is in heaven.

The attitude of the Church with regard to members who commit suicide is that no temple work can be done in their behalf, neither should public funeral services be held over their remains. Members committing suicide after receiving their endowments should not be buried in temple clothing.

I herd early this morning that an express had Come in from the Hand Carts company. I went to the Presidents office with all the Presi dency. The following is a synopsis of what I learned in the morning:
... David Kimball & others went ahead picked out Camp grounds made up fires shoveled off snow. When the Camp Came up they would take the old men & women & Children that Could not walk & carry them to the fire & help them get supper & then would dance around their fires & sing & Shout to keep up the spirits of the people & while Journeying during the day & would wade over all the streams & [-] the Hand Carts over & carry over all the lame women men & Children. ...
Elder G. D. Grant ... says that not more than one third of the Hand Cart Company wer able to walk & many were barefoot & freezeing ther toes.
The Conversation turned to Brother Vancott & Claudious Spencer & Elder Kimball said Brother Young has got much better Eyes than I have for I never Could see Brother Spencer He is so small & President Young said that Brother Vancott took after Orson Pratt in Philosophy. If he had the spirit of God with him he would not have turned that Company back but I am not agoing to blame them.
Among other things the subject of miracles came up & President Young said I have had a $5 gold piece put into my pocket now two days in succession. I do not know from what source it came from. Brother Kimball said it was an Angel. Broth Young then related a circumstance that when He & Broth Kimball was travelling East to gether they had $13.50 ownly & they travelled untill they paid out $87 out of it & had sixpence left & they received no addition by any known hand. Brother Kimball said that an Angel had taken that money out of some body pocket & put it into our trunk.

Met in Temple; long letter from Bro[ther]. [Apostle] Moses Thatcher. He declines to meet his Quorum any more, says he must be examined public before the people. Makes a number of mis[s]tatements so we proved by Bro[ther] F[ranklin] D R[ichards. and Pres[ident] L[orenzo]. Snows letters. Informed him to appear that his case would be handled at His[torian's] office in one week from today. at least that is the tenor of the note dispatched. Pres[iden]t. [Wilford] Woodruff remarked to Council that 'Bro[ther] M[oses]. T[hatcher]. would not yeild to his brethren.' Now it looks like he was giving his apostleship for a bare chance of getting into the U.S. Senate. Poor man how our hearts ache for him and his family. God help them for Moses is beyond reach.

President Joseph F. Smith desires me to draw your attention to the rules governing the recommendations of persons desiring to receive their endowments [in the Endowment House]. Only faithful couples about to be married (or any other marriages,) or couples still bearing children, should receive recommends, with the exception of very aged persons, whose age and infirmities make desirable a departure from the strict observance of the above rule, and then, it should be stated on the recommend, that age or ill health is the reason why it is given. All others will have to wait for their blessings until one of the temples, now in the course of construction, is finished and work commenced therein, or they must go down to the temple at St. George.

Revelation indicated that there were to be presidents over each priesthood office in the church and that the men in each office were to be organized into quorums of twelve deacons, twenty-four teachers, forty-eight priests; and ninety-six elders. "It must needs be that one be appointed of the high Priesthood to preside over the priesthood and he shall be called President of the high priesthood of the Church; or, in other words the presiding high Priest over the high priesthood of the Church." Pres[ident]. Jos[eph]. F. Smith explained the object of the conference which was to ratify the appointment and organization of the Seventy Presidency of the Church and the appointment of the boy Apostle and other officers. He also read a revelation on the order of the Priesthood and said that others of the Presidency and Apostles had not carried out the order of this revelation. I could not help but think, if Jos[eph]. Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff and Lorenzo Snow, together with the Twelve Apostles had erred in this matter, why should we believe that he so soon had received all the light and inspiration. He also said he would never take the bits into his mouth and the reins into his hands and ignore his councillors as others had done before him. I think he has already done this, when he nominated his son as an Apostle. To publicly arraign and criticize men that are his superiors in every way is to me a great mistake and will not add one cubit to his strength or height.

Regarding Ezra Taft Benson's October conference talk,] the Twelve's president Joseph Fielding Smith "agreed heartily with Tanner's objections to the talk in general." Counselor Brown added that Benson's October 1966 conference "talk is wholly objectionable because it does impugn the rest of us and our motives when we have advised the people to live their religion and stay away from extremist ideas and philosophies." Benson had asked for approval to "mimeograph his talk for wider distribution" which the First Presidency disapproved. Still, the presidency ultimately allowed the official report of conference to print Apostle Benson's talk virtually unchanged.

At the ground breaking for the St. George Temple. Band played a tune, after which Br. Brigham said this is the spot where the foundation stone will be laid, and where the records will be placed in a suitable stone made for that purpose, and also near the top of the building in this place. After a few remarks he said (taking the shovel and uncovering his head) we will now proceed to break the ground. He took the shovel and dug a few shovels out near the south east stake, then gave the shovel to Geo. A. Smith who did likewise... Br Brigham standing on a chair instructed the saints how to make the salutation. We raised our right hand to heaven and smote out left at the same time exclaiming hosanna! Hosanna! to God and the Lamb. Amen! Amen! Amen! The congregation was then dismissed by Br Brigham. -- St. George, Utah

Arrival in Salt Lake City of Willie handcart company after loss of sixty-eight persons who freeze or starve to death in mountains. Martin handcart company arrives on 30 Nov. after about 150 similar deaths. This total death rate of 22 percent is worst of any Mormon emigrant companies. With better planning, handcarts bring thousands of European Mormons to Utah for another four years with few deaths.

Dear Br. Hyde,

Your "Dreams" your "Whisperings of the Spirit" your "hopes," "fears" and "doubts"- Your false insinuations, your "disgust" - Your entire want of Confidence in those holding the Keys of the Holy Apostleship, and of the Kingdom of God, in common with yourself - Your railing accusations, and insults against that Priesthood as manifested in certain letters written to me of late, altogether manifest a spirit so false - so foreign from the true spirit of your high and responsable office that I am Constrained to Exhort you to repent and Return again to the Spirit of Charity and Truth.
And, not only so, but if you Continue in the same spirit of Railing, falsehood, and Insult, as manifested towards me in those Letters, Take heed Lest you are removed out of your place, and sent home, to answer for these things before the Council: For, be assured that Spirit shall never preside over me, nor over the Interests of the people of God in this Land so far as I have power by the help of God, and by the Cooperation of Br Taylor and the saints here, to prevent it. - You, Elder Hyde, Do not hold the keys of sitting in Judgement upon my soul, by your dreams, visions, Whispering of the Spirit, [illegible] or fears, or by any other means. This belongs to a united quorum. and they Can only do it by [te]stimony, according to the Laws of the Kingdom.
I [ca]re not a fig for your dreams, nor for the whisperings of the spirit about me, or my teachings for I know [an]d so does the Holy Ghost, and all that hear me, that the spirit that whispers to you bears false witness As I have taught nothing about Marriage, Wives, or [co]venants, or Choosings either for time [or] eternity, In England. Br. H. Let me tell you that the spirit that whispered to you had Lips of flesh and Blood, and a tongue to "set on fire of hell." And next time a spirit of that kind whispers to you, Pray, handle them and see.

[J. Reuben Clark]
Mr. Sidney L. Cohen of the Intermountain Theatres in Salt Lake City (Associate General Manager), came to see my by appointment. He said, "I suppose you know why I am here." I said, yes, I thought I did, that I understood he knew about the rumor that Warner Brothers were going to produce a movie founded on the Mountain Meadow massacre. He said that was it.
I said I would like to begin by telling him a story, whereupon I told him the story of the Judge and the coachmen in Hyde Park, when the Judge seeing that a collision was inevitable, called out to the coachman, "For blank sake, drive into something cheap." I said that the Mormons were cheap, anybody could drive into us and get away with it now, but I said (later in the interview) one hundred years from now it would be a different story.
Then I said that I thought if they were going to produce the Mountain Meadow massacre they ought to write the story of the Saint Bartholomew massacre in France, or the story of the taking of Jerusalem by the Crusaders, and then said he knew the Jewish people had a little escapade they might take up also, that I thought they might then go back through the history of witchcraft in New England, but I saw no more reason for writing the Mountain Meadow Massacre than for writing these, and indicated they all were ancient history. ...
I told him, of the kind it was a very good story.
He said he thought that probably if they learned that such a picture would be offensive to as many people as would be affected by it, that they would wonder whether or not they could re-write the story and leave the Mormons out. I told him that would be impossible. I said, for example, they pictured John D. Lee a brute of the lowest order, yet I had seen Lee's descendants in Southern Utah and Arizona and they were among the leading citizens, adding that you could not have such a progeny from such an ancestor. I also told him that any story of the Mountain Meadow massacre would necessarily implicate some of the leading families of the southern part of the State who were
families of the highest standing.
I told him that President McKay was down in southern California and that he had in mind trying to see Warner Brothers about this matter. He knew about President McKay's being down in that area. ...
He seemed friendly and professed friendship and as having no desire other than to prevent the movie from being made.

The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve considered Republican Smoot's desire to run for the U.S. Senate. According to Anthon H. Lund, "Bro [Lorenzo] Snow said he hoped to live to see us send an apostle there." But advised by President McKinley, Mark Hannah, and Archbishop Ireland that "it would not be wise to let a Mormon go to the senate this year," the Twelve and First Presidency decided to postpone Smoot's bid.

The Presidency & 12, & others met in Council at the Historians Office. They took up the subject of reading the sermon of president Young concerning the late Emigration [Willie and Martin handcart companies] & what Caused so much sufferings. He cast reflections upon J. Taylors & F. D. Richards as Taylor had Henderd the brethren from doing business for several weeks. The greatest reflections were Cast upon him. The Presidency finally concluded they would strike out those sentences that cast reflection upon those brethren & print the rest.

The first temple baptismal font is dedicated. The first ordinance is a baptism for the dead, with Young as officiator and Reuben McBride as proxy. The second ordinance is a baptism for health which heals Samuel Rolfe within the week. Four temples would eventually perform 22,403 baptisms for health from 1877 through 1893.

Brother Samuel Rolfe, who was seriously afflicted with a felon upon one of his hands, was present [at the dedication of the Nauvoo Temple baptismal font]. President Joseph instructed him to wash in the font and told him that the hand would be healed. The doctors had told him that he could not recover before Spring, and had advised him to have his hand cut. He dipped his hand in the font, and within a week he was perfectly healed.

The First Presidency decides that there is no "rule in the church forbidding cousins to inter-marry" and that first cousins can have temple marriages if they present a civil license. General authorities such as Brigham Young, Willard Richards, Joseph F. Smith, and Abraham H. Cannon married their first cousins as legal or plural wives.

Elder Wm. Clark preached about 2 hours when Br Joseph arose & reproved him as pharisaical & hypocritical & not edifying the people.
Br Joseph then deliverd unto us an edifying address showing us what temperance faith, virtue, charity & truth was. He also said if we did not accuse one another God would not accuse us & if we had no accuser we should enter heaven. He would take us there as his backload. If we would not accuse him he would not accuse us & if we would throw a cloak of charity over his sins he would over ours. For charity coverd a multitude of Sins & what many people called sin was not sin & he did many things to break down superstition & he would break it down. He spoke of the curse of Ham for laughing at Noah while in his wine but doing no harm.
After this meeting closed I met with the Twelve & High Priest quorum: the word of wisdom was brought up. B Young says shall I Break the word of wisdom if I go home & drink a cup of tea? No wisdom is justified of her Children. The subject was discused in an interesting manner. All concluded that it was wisdom to deal with all such matters according to the wisdom which God gave. That a forced abstai-nance was not making us free but we should be under bondage with a yoak upon our necks.

It has been decided that it is no longer necessary for those going to the Temples to attend to ordinances therein to send their recommends to President Woodruff to be by him endorsed. The signatures of the Bishop and Stake President will be all that is required.
This decision applies to all ordinances attended to in the House of the Lord, except Second Anointings, which last named will still require the approval of the President of the Church before they can be administered. ...

An Express came in this morning announcing that the first company of Hand carts were in Echo Kanyon doing as well as could be expected and that the snow fell one foot deep this side the Little mountain last night. Brother Kimball said that any man that was faithful in the priesthood would have all the blessings He Could imagin or think in his heart and when Father Joseph Smith was on his dying bed I asked him to bless me so it might be written as he had blessed me several times & it was not written but Father Smith told me to write down every thing that I could think of in my heart or imagin & he would sign it & it should come to pass but He said a man must keep the Commandments of God in order to obtain the blessings.

The Spirit whispereth me that you are preaching things in Manchester which you ought not. The union of man and wife hereafter, or if they are dissatisfied with their bound present companions they are not ^ to be united for Eternity, but are at liberty to choose others.
I hope I am mistaken but I fear I am not. It is the spirit of lust that teaches the above doctrine ... I hope that such teachings may not call forth a rebuke through

We do know better than to teach the above things, for they will lead every little upstart, both male and female to desires another companion. It is opening the very floodgates of sensuality and lust, and the church in this coun try will be carried away in the streams of corruption which such teachings will gender.

Joseph Smith helps to organize the Kirtland Safety Society in Kirtland, Ohio, a venture undertaken to serve the banking needs of the growing community of Latter-day Saints in Ohio. Technically a joint stock company -- the state of Ohio refused organizers' request to be chartered as a bank -- the society was dramatically weakened by the Panic of 1837 and eventually collapsed. (The Panic of 1837 was a five-year depression that began when New York City banks ended the practice of exchanging bank notes for gold and silver coinage.)
The failure led to resentment and accusations and was a factor in the worsening mob violence that caused Smith to abandon Kirtland in January 1838.

Revelation received, "the written Testimony of the Twelve for the Doctrine and Covenants" which was "signed by thirteen priesthood holders, most signing after November 1831. John Whitmer copied five additional names on to the testimony manuscript ... none of the eleven witnesses of the Book of Mormon signed this testimony document. Some of the witnesses—Joseph Smith Sr., Hyrum Smith, Martin Harris, Hiram Page and Samuel Smith—were not in attendance for the meetings in November 1831 when this revelation was recorded. Other Book of Mormon witnesses—Peter Whitmer Jr, Christian Whitmer, David Whitmer, John Whitmer and Oliver Cowdery—were in attendance for these November meetings, but did not sign the testimony." The 1835 D&C version has ten words missing from the original.

Smith were all present and occupied all the time of both meetings, also all of the time of the Priesthood Meeting in the evening, and taught the people in these meetings that not only plural marriages had ceased in the Church but that Brethren should not live with their plural families hereafter, but observe strictly the law of the land in this matter, but were to provide for their plural families and educate their children as best they could. I did not attend the evening meeting; was unwell.
