I have attended the Grand Council [Council of Fifty], as I will call it. Elder Woodworth has returned from Texas. The prospect of our obtaining room to form a colony there is fair.
At the last Grand Council I attended, William and Wilson Law, R. D. Foster and those in connection with them were by the voice of the council delivered up to the buffetings of Satan, after having been visited in all kindness by two of the brethren.

At noon today, between the sessions of the conference, the First Council of Seventy met at the office of the First Presidency, also Thomas E. Bassett, President of the Fremont [Idaho] Stake, Moses W. Taylor, President of Summit [Utah] Stake, and Jesse N. Smith, President of Snowflake [Arizona] Stake, these being all the prominent presiding officers that could be reached handily. President [Joseph F.] Smith informed them that the Apostles met yesterday afternoon, also this morning at nine o'clock, for the purpose of considering the exigencies of the present, said to be existing in reference to alleged plural marriages having been solemnized; and he said that the First Presidency and Apostles had decided to issue an official declaration on the subject, which was then read to them. After which they were invited to support it at the conference this afternoon, if they felt they could do so, with the understanding that each person present was left free to express himself in regard to it.
Questions were asked which drew from President Smith the statement that this declaration was nothing more nor less than confirmatory of President [Wilford] Woodruff's manifesto of 1890; adding that if any plural marriages had been performed they were performed without his knowledge or consent, and that persons having entered into them, or solemnized them, must be held responsible for their acts to the law of the land, as well as the rule and discipline of the Church. With this understanding the position of the First Presidency was endorsed on motion of George Reynolds.

They were much interested in the great Tabernacle and Congregation.

The Spirit of the Lord rested powerfully upon the First Presidency each of whom addressed the meeting. All present felt the force of the remarks made."

.... At 7 PM. A meeting of the Priesthood was held in the assembly hall, President John Taylor, G. Q. Cannon, and Joseph F. Smith, occupied the time, till 10 PM, chiefly on celestial marriage, saying it was binding on all the Latter-day-saints, and that no man was entitled to the right of the Presiding, without abiding this law. They advised Presidents of Stakes, who have not obeyed this law to do so; or resign their positions as presidents. [John Taylor names three monogamous stake presidents.]

Talmage lectures to the Brigham Young Academy faculty in Sep on "The Effects of the Narcotic Hashish on the Human System," but the Faculty Minute Book do not record whether he mentioned the source of his information.

The Presidency and members of the Quorum of 12 met at 10 a.m. Prest. W. Woodruff announced the Doctrine of adoption to be that the members of famalies should connect their line just as far as possible and then join the whole to the Prophet. Wives in the church can have ordinances performed for their dead husband who were not in the church and be sealed to such husband.
We had a most happy day, all present endorsing this Doctrine. We partook of the sacrament. It was a most joyous day.

At meeting of First Presidency and apostles, Wilford Woodruff announces revelation which ends practice of adopting (sealing) men to LDS leaders. He instructs Mormons to seal each generation of ancestors to preceding generation. This results in program of genealogical research. His published sermon is only available text of the revelation. Old form of adoption ordinance continues sporadically in LDS temples with high of fifteen adoptions ceremonies in 1910. The revelation is never canonized.
On a different matter George Q. Cannon says, "I believe in concubinage, or some plan whereby men and women can live together under sacred ordinances and vows until they can be married," to which President Woodruff responds, "If men enter into some practice of this character to raise a righteous posterity, they will be justified in it." Woodruff adds, "The day is near when there will be no difficulty in the way of good men securing noble wives."

If he had the choice to go to China or to be one of the counselors of the President of the church he would prefer the mission to China. He did not want any position in the church, but he was willing to work he was satisfied that the Lord was with Prest. Woodruff in his selection of Bro Cannon and he could sustain him with all of his heart, and he was glad of the privilege to sustain both Bros. Woodruff and Cannon. Did not think that we should cast Moses out of our affections simply because he had not had the manifestation that Prest. Cannon was called of the Lord. ...
Heber J. Grant said that he did not think that brother Young was justified in making the remarks that he had done regarding Moses I did not think that there was any blame attached to a man simply because he did not have a manifestation of the Lord on some subject. ....

The procession was grand being Composed of about 500 members. Woodruff announced the Doctrine of adoption to be that the members of famalies should connect their line just as far as possible and then join the whole to the Prophet. Wives in the church can have ordinances performed for their dead husband who were not in the church and be sealed to such husband.
We had a most happy day, all present endorsing this Doctrine. We partook of the sacrament. It was a most joyous day.

At meeting of First Presidency and apostles, Wilford Woodruff announces revelation which ends practice of adopting (sealing) men to LDS leaders. He instructs Mormons to seal each generation of ancestors to preceding generation. This results in program of genealogical research. His published sermon is only available text of the revelation. Old form of adoption ordinance continues sporadically in LDS temples with high of fifteen adoptions ceremonies in 1910. The revelation is never canonized.
On a different matter George Q. Cannon says, "I believe in concubinage, or some plan whereby men and women can live together under sacred ordinances and vows until they can be married," to which President Woodruff responds, "If men enter into some practice of this character to raise a righteous posterity, they will be justified in it." Woodruff adds, "The day is near when there will be no difficulty in the way of good men securing noble wives."

The procession was grand being Composed of about 500 members. The chairman [Joseph Smith] explained the meaning of the word "Ahman" which signifies the first man or first God, and "Ahman Christ" signifies the first mans son. ...
Er R[eynolds] Cahoon considered the subject before the council ahead of every thing presented to his view ever before; that we were preparing a foundation for the fulfilment of the prophets; that the constitutions of the nations of the earth compared to the constitutions of Gods kingdom is like the skeleton of a horse head, compared to the head itself ...
Er Levi Richards has been extremely interested in the contemplations of the evening. Never had felt those lofty songs of freedom burn within him as on this evening. We want laws to govern us, which are, "thus saith the Lord. God has said of the last days that he would rule all nations with a rod of Iron which is the word of God. ...
Er H[eber] C. Kimball said he had sweat an hour, and wanted to say a few words. The spirit had been like fire in his bones, He said we must lay a foundation broad enough to reinstate all things which have not been made perfect. We must swallow the whole stream and then will have all power.
Er [Brigham] Young. said spirits had been more susceptible these few councils than ever before. ... No line can be drawn between the church and other governments, of the spritual and temporal affairs of the church. Revelations must govern. ...

Pres. Richards ... Said he desired to say a few words about Freemasonry. A Masonic Lodge, he said, was established in Nauvoo and Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Willard Richards, John Taylor, Lorenzo Snow, Orson Hyde, F. D. Richards, and about 1000 others in all became Masons. Joseph, the Prophet, was aware that there were some things about Masonry which had come down from the beginning and he desired to know what they were, hence the lodge. The Masons admitted some keys of knowledge appertaining to Masonry were lost. Joseph enquired of the Lord concerning the matter and He revealed to the Prophet true Masonry, as we have it in our temples. Owing to the superior knowledge Joseph had received, the Masons became jealous and cut off the Mormon Lodge. ...
Apostle H. J. Grant made brief remarks. Referred to the prediction of Pres.. Richards made 3 months ago (see page 88) [see 11 January 1899] that the Lord would open up the way for his deliverance from debt. Said it was being fulfilled—Jany. 1, 1899, he was, he said, $82,000 [in debt]. With the changes that had taken place and the advance in his stocks and holdings his indebtedness would now practically amount to $57,000.00. Thought it would have been better had he remained out of politics: it would be better to wait until we are sent. It was true, he said, that he had entertained some feelings against Pres. Can-non, but could now say that he had overcome and was in a proper frame of mind to break bread with him, and could do so without compunctions of conscience.

Pres. F. D. Richards made brief opening remarks. ... 1781 elders are now in the field. Of this number, 29 are sisters and 41 native elders.... Spoke of politics and said that political dissensions have the effect of bringing a spirit of coolness among the people.
Apostle Brigham Young ... Said he understood there [were] feelings on the part of one member of the quorum [Heber J. Grant] against one of the Presidency—Pres. Geo. Q. Cannon—growing out of politics. He thought, if this were true, the matter ought to be talked over in the quorum. Speaking of politics, he said, it seemed strange that politics should cause a man to reject the Lord, but such had actually been the case with some of the brethren recently, who, after pledging themselves, failed to carry out the counsel of the prophet. We ought to take up a labor with our leading men with reference to sustaining the priesthood.
Pres. Richards said that, if any of the brethren entertained feelings against the Presidency of a personal nature, they should be settled in a personal way and the matter should not be brought before the quorum.
At 1:20 p.m. the meeting adjourned to the temple annex to be present at a surprise given in honor of Pres. Snow's 85th birthday.

Marriner W Merrill ... regretted that some of the brethren were neglecting their plural families and were taking advantage of the Manifesto and claiming that they were following it in so doing, but he had never so understood the Manifesto and he had preached to the brethren to do their duty by their families ... He had not felt at the time Prest Woodruff read the Manifesto to him to sustain it and Prest Woodruff had asked him to get something better and said that it was the mind of the Lord that some thing should be done. He had gone to the Lord and had been given a testimony that the Manifesto was right.
Prest Cannon made some remarks on our condition as we now were situated on account of men not being able to take more wives and he wished that his girls could have the privilege of marrying some good men even if they were not the first wife rather than to have to marry some of the young men they might have to. Prest Woodruff remarked that the day was not far away when there would be a change and greater liberty would be given in the matter of marriage.

When [Joseph] Smith first told of getting the book of plates he said it would tell him how to get hidden treasures in the earth; and his father, soon after they got the plates, came in to my mother's one morning, just after breakfast, and told that Joe had a book and that it would tell him how to get money that was buried in the ground, and that he also found a pair of EYE-GLASSES on the book by which he could interpret it, and that the glasses were as big as a breakfast plate; and he said that if the angel Gabriel should come down and tell him he could not get this hidden treasure, HE WOULD TELL HIM HE WAS A LIAR.

In the Course of Conversation President Young said we must begin to look out some good hiding Places to put the women and Children & old men & provisions & Prepare for another war. I am satisfied the Present one will fizzle out. I would recommend to lay up a good quantity of Dried Beans and peas. They will keep longer than any other grain. We want to find a place which will be hard of access that Cannot be taken but that has water that Cannot be Cut off and we want to go <where it is warmer to the south> and store up provisions against a time of Need.
Lorenzo Snow accompanied me home & we met with the Twelve in our Prayer Circle. O Pratt Prayed & G. A. Smith was mouth. They Called upon the Lord to ward off the blow of our enemies and that their folley & wickedness might be made manifest in the Eyes of the Nation and that the Judgments of God might rest upon the wicked who were seeking the lives of the righteous. The views of the Brethren were expressed Concerning the illegal procedings of the Court in Provo [regarding claims that Brigham Young ordered murders] and believed the Lord would overrule it for the good of his people.

Sunday morning [April 1] about 8 inches of snow fell in our area, and I got the snow plow out and cleared off the driveway. There was a complication in that Grace and I had been requested to attend the special meeting at the temple at 4:30 right after conference. ... Grace and I heard President Kimball's last talk as we drove to the parking plaza from home, and then went to the special temple service in the Celestial room of the temple. [[This is when the Arringtons were anointed by President Kimball, accompanied by apostles David B. Haight and Boyd K. Packer, in an event Arrington mentioned initially to his children only by saying he "went to the temple with mamma for an inspirational session." Grace Arrington added that "it was wonderful, too sacred to write about. But it will change my life". A week later, Sunday, April 8, the Arringtons completed the second part of the ordinance in their home by performing a feet-washing ritual.]]

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gives an "Oscar" to two Mormons: Kieth Merrill (director, documentary 'The Great American Cowboy') and James Payne (set design, 'The Sting'). They are the first Mormon winners in 33 years, but LDS nominees are Leigh Harline (music scores, 1943, 1944, 1963), Arnold Friberg (art work, 'The Ten Commandments,' 1956), Russ Tamblyn (supporting actor, 'Peyton Place,' 1957). Tamblyn also receives a Golden Globe award in 1956 as the "most promising newcomer," as does LDS Ruth Buzzi in 1973 for her supporting role in television's 'Laugh-In.' Within days, the Council on International Non-theatrical Events (CINE) gives its "Golden Eagle" award to Brigham Young University for "Cipher in the Snow," which receives international distribution among schools and various religious denominations. In 1989 the LDS church and Bonneville International also receive two Golden Eagle awards for their "Homefront" public-service advertisements. Individual Mormons

Petersen, address to the Regional Representatives Seminar, Apr. 2, 1969] We are very concerned that our people going to the temple for the first time have a better introduction to the temple. There are too many people who are given temple recommends with no explanation whatever. They come to the temple not knowing what to expect. Some are disappointed, many are thrilled, but we feel that people ought to have some kind of an introduction to the temple before they go to the temple and they are more likely to understand what they receive and with better understanding they are more likely to be loyal to the covenants that they make.

Apostle Spencer W. Kimball attends his first temple meeting since his return from touring missions in South America. He emphasizes to the First Presidency and the Twelve the special problem in Latin America's "Catholic countries [where] divorce could not be obtained" and "some set up new households without legal sanction... When such people wished to join the [LDS] Church the missionaries would not baptize them, since technically they lived in adultery." Kimball's authorized biography notes that he successfully persuades the First Presidency to adopt a policy that "such couples could be baptized if they showed that they had done what they could to legalize their relationship, had been faithful to one another, had met responsibility to their previous [and only legal] family, and had conformed to the expectations of custom." From 1959 onward it is the LDS church policy to baptize, ordain, and give temple ordinances to any Latin American man complying with the above requirements, even
though he is living with a woman in a legally unmarried relationship defined as adulterous by "the law of the land" where they live.

Woolley, but failed to bring out evidence enough to justify the Council in taking action against Bro[ther]. Cowley, although some things went to indicate that he was responsible for Bro[ther]. [John] Woolley's operations. Action was taken against Bro[ther]. Woolley on his own confession and he was excommunicated from the Church, but he wanted to share the responsibility of his transgression with Bro[ther]. Cowley. Bro[ther]. Cowley denied everything, and was willing to take an oath that he had not encouraged anybody to enter plural marriage since action was taken on his case. ...

Non-Mormon judge convicts three Mormons (two of them policemen) for conspiracy in Parrish familiy's murder. Under immunity two LDS men testify that Springville bishop ordered the killings because the Parrishes were leaving Utah with unpaid tithing. Shot to death, the bodies are left with slit throats as "blood atonement."

Jedediah M. Grant, counselor in the First Presidency, instructed elders to look "for some flaming sword unsheathed" in the heavens or other special signs to "dismiss their fears, and dispense with all their anxiety" for the final events were "rushing upon the astonished world with such velocity, as to exceed even our most sanguine expectations." Children would live to raise the dead. In no more than fifty years, [1854+50=1904] everyone in the congregations would have been borne aloft to meet Christ. And Apostle George A. Smith warned the world that "the day of the Lord is near . . . and we should watch for the coming of the Son of Man."

A survey of Dialogue subscribers shows that 94 percent are LDS, 88 percent attend church "every" or "most" Sundays (although no attendance figures are publicly available, the churchwide average is generally considered to be no more than 50 percent), two-thirds accept the Book of Mormon as "an actual historical record of ancient inhabitants," and less than half feel they should "go along with" a policy with which they disagree--10 percent accepting it "on faith" and another 37 percent expressing disagreement and then complying.

The Ayatollah Khomeini calls for an Islamic republic in Iran. Four days later the onetime US Secretary of the Treasury under US President Nixon, David M. Kennedy, is appointed by the LDS First Presidency as its "special representative" to foreign governments to ask for formal recognition of the church abroad. He will serve for sixteen years.

(April) Society for Early Historic Archaeology at Brigham Young Univeristy is the first organized effort to promote the study of Book of Mormon archaeology since the BYA expedition of 1900-02. Similar efforts have been the New World Archaeological Foundation (1952), Foundation for Research on Ancient America (RLDS-sponsored, 1966), Zarahemla Research Foundation (RLDS-affiliated, 1978), Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (F.A.R.M.S., 1979), and the Anceint America Foundation (1994). In 1995, F.A.R.M.S. signs a "protocol" to formalize their relationship with BYU and allow its publications in tenure ("continuing status") decisions for faculty. F.A.R.M.S. begins construction of its own large office building and research facility in Provo in 1995.

James J. Strang began to "gather" his followers to a new colony on Beaver Island in MI. By late 1850 his old headquarters at Voree, Walworth, WI was largely deserted. Some apostates from his group, led by Aaron Smith, remained in Walworth Co. after Strang's departure to MI.

While preparing his trial against Doctor Hurlbut Joseph writes in his journal. "My soul delighteth in the Law of the Lord for he forgiveth my sins and will confound mine Enimies. The Lord shall destroy him who has lifted his heel against me, even that wicked man Docter P[hilastus] H[u]rlbut. He will deliver him to the fowls of heaven and his bones shall be cast to the blast of the wind for he lifted his arm against the Almi[gh]ty. Therefore the Lord shall destroy him." Interestingly this passage is in the form of a "chiasmus" similar to passages found in the Book of Mormon.
