[Heber J. Grant]
Had a chat with George F. Richards and then one with Joseph Fielding Smith. I tried Saturday last to see Joseph Fielding Smith. He has been very strongly in favor of supporting Eldred Smith for Patriarch. After my talk today he assured me he was delighted with the choice I had decided to make and with all his heart could support him. I feel very glad to have this message from him. I had feared that he might still stand out for the appointment of Eldred Smith. He said the man I have nominated'Joseph F. Smith III., now teaching in the University, was worthy of it and he could with all his heart approve of him, and that he had felt that he was worthy to be one of the Apostles.

Mormon leader Brigham Young tried to prevent U.S. troops from entering the territory of Utah, when President James Buchanan sent them into to impose federal law. The Mormons attacked the federal troops' supply lines, burning Fort Bridger, and setting fire to the plains to deprive the advancing army of forage for its horses. At the same time, he readied a plan to evacuate and destroy Salt Lake City, should the federal troops get through.

I had a long talk with him [George F. Richards] and he is very anxious that I nominate someone to be the Patriarch of the Church. He feels that a mistake has been made in waiting ten long years since Brother Hyrum G. Smith died. I assured him that I had made up my mind to appoint some person to the position. He expressed his pleasure and assured me that whomever I named he would heartily support.

Tuesday, Sept. 13/87. I did not sleep very much last night in consequence of a communication which was made to me concerning the feelings of some of the brethren of the Twelve in regard to myself. The communication was made in confidence and the party making it did not wish his name mentioned in connection with it. I have felt for some time that there is some influence at work which is not of the Lord. We have had more division and feelings among us than I think is profitable. In fact, I have lost confidence in the State movement, because of these manifestations of feeling that I have witnessed, and for some reason I have been made in part the object of (at least, it seemed to me so) manifestations of feeling. The acts of the First Presidency which have not been agreeable to some of the brethren of the Twelve, I find that I am blamed with. I am credited with having had great influence with President Taylor and that through this influence measures were adopted that, in some instance, were not pleasing to the brethren of the Twelve. I have learned that Bro. H. J. Grant particularly had made expressions that I considered very unsuitable for a man in his calling to make concerning another. But I learned that Bros. M. Thatcher and F. M. Lyman had also expressed themselves concerning me. I was very much grieved to hear this, because I have met with these brethren before President Taylor died and supposed that everything was pleasant and harmonious; but they have concealed their feelings from me; and even now, after we have had one meeting in which explanations were made, they seem still, so it appears, to entertain feelings that I think improper. ...

James Holt Haslam arrives in Cedar City from Salt Lake City two days after the Mountain Meadows Massacre with orders from Brigham Young to let the emigrants pass unharmed. When Isaac Haight reads Young's letter he says, "Too late, too late," and "cried like a child." At Sunday services in Cedar City Patriarch Elisha H. Groves speaks"upon the principles of the gospel, and of the Lamanites [being] the battle axe of the Lord." "John D. Lee, with a large band of Indians loaded with loot from the massacre, arrive back at Fort Harmony. Entering the gates, they ride around the center of the fort, their tinware jangling and the bundles of clothing tied awkwardly; they ride around once and stop while the Indians give their whoop of victory, and Lee declares loudly, 'Thanks be to the Lord God of Israel, who has this day delivered our enemies into our hands'" Meanwhile in Salt Lake City Apostle George A. Smith preaches that there is "a spirit in the breasts of some [at Parowan, southern Utah] to wish that their enemies might come and give them a chance to fight and take vengeance for the cruelties that had been inflicted upon us in the States."

Presidet Brigham Young ... said that he had had the persecutions of the saints before him all the morning that He was righteously angry. He was so angry he could not preach. But He did preach in the power of God & told the people his Feelings. ...
... President Young was now to have his last interview with [Captain Van Vleit] ...
If the government of the United States perish in sending Armies to destroy us in the name of the Lord we shall Conquer them. If the Government Calls for volunteers in Calafornia & the people turn out to come to destroy us they will find their own buildings in flames before they get far from home & so throughout the United States. Again if they Commence the war I shall not hold the Indians Still by the fist any longer for white men to shoot at them but I shall let them go ahead & do as they please and I shall Carry the war into their own land and they will want to let out the Job before they get half through.
And even should an Armey of 50,000 men get into this valley when they got here they would find nothing but a Barren waste. ...
Again you may tell them they must stop all emigration across this Continent for they Cannot tread in safety. The Indians will kill all that attempt it. ...
Capt Van Vleit said that if Our Government pushed forward this thing & made war upon us He should withdraw from the Army for he would not have a hand in sheding the blood of American Citizens.
After closing His remarks Presidet Young said God had set up his kingdom upon the Earth & it was here & the Lord would sustain that kingdom & he would destroy all that fought against it And if the Armies of the United [States] Came against us the Lord would permit them to be destroyed.

Ernest L. Wilkinson, President of BYU, met with BYU general counsel Clyde Sandgren, the new Dean of Students, J. Elliott Cameron, and Apostle Spencer Kimball and Mark E. Petersen "on the question of homosexuals who might possibly be part of the student body." They developed a cooperative system where Mormon General Authorities and other Church administrators would give BYU any information they obtained about homosexuals on campus and BYU would give Church administrators information about homosexual church members. They decide, "as a general policy that no one will be admitted as a student at the BYU whom we have convincing evidence is a homosexual."

At a meeting of the Stirling Ward, Canada: "Apostle Taylor said he had decided to let the people write the name of the man they desired to act as Bishop of the Ward. Bro. Taylor wished them to write 3 names after which a selection would be made. Bro Taylor said that though the people had had a chance to make their choice he wished the final vote to be unanimous." This is also the practice of Apostle Francis M. Lyman in choosing new bishops.

At Jacob Hamblin's ranch, 4 miles from the Mountain Meadows killing field, John D. Lee (sleeping on his saddle blanket with his saddle for a pillow) is awakened by an argument between Col. William Dame and Lt. Col. Isaac Haight. After breakfast they continue on to Mountain Meadows to secure property and supervise burial of the dead. Upon seeing the sight Dame and Haight argued over whether Dame ordered it or not. The bodies are stripped of any valuables but many bodies are either left unburied or buried so shallowly that animals dig them up and wild animals and buzzards eat flesh from their bones. Stake President Haight told the men, "thay had been priveleged to keep a part of their covenant to avenge the blood of the prophets." The men then held a prayer circle (left hand on shoulder of man next to him, right arm to the square) with John Higbee, Isaac Haight, John D. Lee, and William Dame in the center, facing the four points of the compass. Stake president Haight led the men in a solemn oath never to discuss the matter and "to help kill all who proved to be traitors to the Church or people in this matter."
