[Brigham Young Jr.]
Twelve met in Temple all present but Bro[ther]s Grant & Merril ... Pres[ident] Snow led out on Adam being our father and God. How beautiful the thought it brought God nearer to us. Bro[ther] Franklin said it made him thrill through his whole body it was new & it was inspiring.

I had A question put to me by President Young what my opinion was concerning one of the Twelve Apostles being appointed as the President of the Church with his two Councellors. I Answered that A quorum like the Twelve who had been appointed by revelation & confirmed by revelation from time to time I thought it would require A revelation to change the order of that quorum.

[We]could see the auxiliaries running the Church as it were. . . . We had no Priesthood board but they had large and talented and powerful Mutual boards and Sunday school boards and Relief Society boards and Primary boards. And they scattered throughout the Church teaching their message, and they were talented people and taught so well that the auxiliaries of the Church were far more effective and powerful in the members' idea and view than the were the Priesthood quorums. . . . So I would say, to characterize the Church prior to Correlation, that the auxiliaries ran it and everything took second place to them.

The First Presidency and apostles vote privately that John T. Caine be a candidate for Utah's delegate to Congress. Three hours later the Council of Fifty convenes, discusses who should be the delegate, and also nominates Caine. This is the clearest example of the hierarhcy directing the meetings of the Fifty to arrive at pre-determined decisions.

[David O. McKay Office Journal]
In Council meeting this morning I referred to the attempted expansion in Huntsville by the Catholics; that they had purchased some additional property on the west, and price seems to be no question to them . . . . I mentioned this just to let the Brethren know what the Catholics are trying to do there. Sometime ago they tried to buy the Bingham property just a short distance from their present holdings for the purpose of establishing a nunnery, and it may be that is the purpose they have in mind in trying to get this property in the middle field. I hope to purchase 50 acres of the land for myself in order to help the Bishop secure possession of the property. I said, "The Catholic Church is against us, and wherever they can prevent our growth they are going to do it."

In one of my conversations with him [i.e., Presiding Patriarch Joseph F. Smith] he told me that President Smith's widow, Mary T. Smith, mother of Dr. Silas Smith, told him that he had a conversation with her and that President Joseph F. Smith had told her that the Patriarch belonged in his line. I was very happy to have that information. It is a great satisfaction to me to know President Joseph F. Smith felt that the patriarchal line should go to his family instead of John Smith's line.

145th Field Artillery regiment departs Utah for duty in the "Great War" (World War I). Nearly all of its 1,300 to 1,500 officers and enlisted men are LDS, so the unit is nicknamed "the Mormon regiment." Seventy's president B.H. Roberts serves in the regiment as a chaplain. He is the first active general authority since 1846 to participate in a U.S. war and is among the first three Mormons to serve as U.S. military chaplains. There are 665 deaths (including missing-in-action) among the 21,000 Utahns (primarily Mormons) who serve in World War I.

It was represented that there are five large windows needed [for the Salt Lake Temple] which will cost $1500.00 each. Bro[ther]s. John R Winder, M[oses] Thatcher, Geo[rge] Romney, H[eber] J Grant & J[ohn] R Murdock agreed to each furnish 1 window. Pres[iden]t Jos[eph] F Smith moved that we accept the offer of these brethren. Sec[onded] & Car[rie]d. Elder B. H. Roberts suggested that a Bureau of Information be established at the Worlds Fair so that Elders can be appointed and printed matter provided to give information to the thousands who will attend there. Elder A[ngus]. M Cannon also suggested such a bureau at Salt Lake City. On motion of Elder Moses Thatcher the consideration of these suggestions was left to the First Presidency for such action as they deem proper. On motion a few of the brethren were requested to take the names and amounts which each one present felt to give to the completion of the Temple. $50,000.00 was subscribed at this meeting.
