The "seige" [sic] in Washington [D.C.] continues with my father [i.e., Joseph F. Smith] on the
stand. He has been forced to answer all kinds of questions with have been asked by moral lepers who are unworthy to unloose his shoes, and some of these vile creatures are, too, members of the Committee of privileges and elections.

[Apostle Abraham H. Cannon Journal] Uncle Angus [M. Cannon] ... spoke very plainly upon the vices of the young, the evils of round dancing, masquerade balls, surprise parties, and other things. Some people felt he was too pointed in some of his expressions, but if good results from what he said, we may be thankful to the Lord. ...

...A letter was read from President Alma O. Taylor of the Japanese Mission, dated 9th ult., stating in effect that the translation of the Book of Mormon was now finished, and all references inserted down to the end of 3rd Nephi, 3rd chapter, and the first part of the translation had gone to the printer. Brother Taylor also stated that he had been thinking for some time that, after completing his work on the publication, that he would like to visit China and Korea for the purpose of getting an idea of conditions in those countries, as he had been led to believe that opportunities for missionary work were superior to those in Japan.
It was the sense of the Council, on motion of Brother John Henry Smith, that permission be given to Brother Taylor to visit China and Korea, as contemplated by him, and on motion of Brother Heber J. Grant it was thought well for Brother Fred Caine to accompany him. ...

THE POSITION OF ADAM AND NOAH IN THE PRIESTHOOD
The Prophet Joseph taught us that father Adam was the first man on the earth to whom God gave the keys of the everlasting priesthood. He held the keys of the presidency, and was the first man who did hold them. Noah stood next to him, he being the father of all living in his day, as Adam was in his day. THESE TWO MEN WERE THE FIRST WHO RECEIVED THE PRIESTHOOD IN THE ETERNAL WORLDS, BEFORE THE WORLDS WERE FORMED. They were the first who received the everlasting priesthood or presidency on the earth. Father Adam stands at the head, so far as this world is concerned. Of course, Jesus Christ is the Great High Priest of the salvation of the human family. But Adam holds those keys in the world today; he will hold them to the endless ages of eternity. And Noah, and every man who has ever held or will hold the keys of presidency of the kingdom of God, from that day until the scene is wound up, will have to stand before Father Adam and give an account unto the lord, of the principles that we have received when our work is done in the flesh.

Oliver Cowdry never to my knowledge denied any part of his testimony, on the contrary as I have done protested against every fabrication made by designing persons & parties & emphatically testified as written in the Book of Mormon until Death which occured in this place[.] his wife & child yet living furnish one of the best pictures of a living faith in what their father testified to before death as written in the B[ook] of M[ormon].

Before committee of U.S. Senate, President Joseph F. Smith testifies under oath: "I have never pretended to nor do I profess to have received revelations. I never said that I had a revelation except so far as God has shown me that so-called Mormonism is God's divine truth, that is all." Smith also testifies that he is cohabitating with his plural wives and acknowledges that he is in violation of laws of both the church and of the state. Although he is truthful about his own illegal post-manifesto cohabitation he lies under oath about official church involvement in post-manifesto plural marriages. He is following advice he had given to others: "We should consider the interests of the Church rather than our own." He is the first LDS president to testify before congress.

[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] One spoke in tongues & Brother Covington interpeted it. The following is the substance of it:
That you should not give heed to the medium & spirit rappers that are in the land. For when the Lord sent the Holy Ghost anciently to the servants of God it came in the form of a dove. And when the Holy Ghost came to Abraham while He was bound & about to be slain by the Priest of Elkena He came in the form of a Dove & so when He came to Jesus He came in the form of a Dove. We continued our meeting through evening & had a good time.
