"Drank a glass of beer at Moissers," reads an entry in Joseph Smith's manuscript diary in reference to Frederick G. Moesser's "grog shop," which Joseph had condemned in a sermon on Aug 12, 1843. When the manuscript history is published as HISTORY OF THE CHURCH this sentence is omitted without indication.

Also the previous day Joseph Smith directed that a sick sister (Richards) drink some Raspberry TEA.

    Finally, Joseph's sermon was on Sunday Aug.13, 1843 (NOT Aug.12). See HC 5:531. See also DMQ-1, MH:OP, Appendix 7, p.645.

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. (1 Tim.5:23).

Especially good advice if/when the water is tainted or foul.

a little wine is 4 oz. at lunch, and 4 oz at dinner per reliable medical sources. red wine (from grapes) is the best for one's heart. A cup of tea, or ONE glass of beer with lunch and/or dinner would also be in moderation.
