Joseph Charles Bentley (1859-1942), was the youngest son of Richard Bentley and Elizabeth Price, Mormon converts who immigrated from Eng- land to Nauvoo, Illinois and married there in 1843. They moved to Salt Lake City and then to St. George, Utah. Joseph Charles Bentley served as a Mormon missionary to England between 1879 and 1881. He returned and married Margaret McKean Ivins, and in 1892 they immigrated to the Mormon colony of Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. He later married Gladys Elizabeth Woodmansee as his second wife, and Maud Mary Taylor as his third wife. In all they had 21 children and adopted another. Within the Mormon colonies in Chihuahua he was a leader in business and industry, and did much to promote fairs and exhibits, both within the colonies and in other places, especially Mexico City. He was instrumental in starting business projects and industry in the colonies. As Bishop and Stake Prsident he was for many years in charge of the schools, hiring personnel, encouraging teachers and administrators and generally promoting this vital activity in the colonies.
