Deseret News editorial against universal male suffrage for the United States: "Education and intelligence should precede the suffrage, otherwise the latter would be like a razor in the hands of a child - more likely to prove destructive than otherwise." Since Utah is not a state, it is unable to cast its vote against the 15th amendment (Mar. 1870).
