140 years ago today - Apr 2, 1879

President Joseph Young gave a history of the organization of the First Quorum of Seventies, and of the calling of the First Presidents of Seventies to their respective offices. He observed that he did not consider the rule in keeping with the teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith to take a Seventy into the High Priest's Quorum, not to take a High Priest and place him into [sic] the Seventies Quorum, but he urged upon the brethren not to discuss upon points of authority as to which [was] the greatest, but to humble themselves even as little children and to magnify the calling they had already received, for by so doing they would reach the highest attainment in the Priesthood that could be made. He remarked that since the 'Twelve' had shut down the gate and taken out nearly one thousand of our brethren to organize the Priesthood of the various Stakes, under the direction of Br Brigham, we have had quite a respite, for which he felt to thank God. ...
