Brother [John Henry Smith] Smith spoke of the administration of the sacrament. He had noted that on the two last occasions Present Joseph F. Smith had not taken wine, but water. He thought we should express ourselves on this subject and then that one of the brethren speak with the Presidency and learn their wishes regarding this matter. Brother Smith said he wanted to follow the lead of his chief and follow a strictly temperate basis. He mentioned President [Lorenzo] Snow's views of the Word of Wisdom, and the use of meat. We should teach the Saints to take a consistent and temperate course. [Note: George Teasdale, Matthias F. Cowley, and Abraham Owen Woodruff favored the use of wine, Marriner Wood Merrill did not address the issue, Reed Smoot wanted to leave the question to the First Presidency, and Hyrum M. Smith said he preferred water.]
