[Apostle John Henry Smith Diary] Honeyville, Box Elder County
President Rudger Clawson and his councilors. Madsen and Charles Kelley joined us here and we met with the Saints at 10 a.m.
The Bishop of the Ward has been suspended by the Presidency of the Stake and the sacrament withheld from the Saints on account of derision and strife.
... At 2 p.m. we got the Priesthood of the Ward together and made an effort at reconciliation, but we failed to reach any satisfactory result. At 3:30 p.m. all of the Saints met. Bros. Madsen, C. Kelly, Myself and Bro. H. J. Grant spoke on forgiveness and in casting aside our prejudice. A very good spirit was present with us.
The Priesthood met again at 7:30 p.m. and all finally agreed to forgive each other and put themselves in a position to take of the Sacrament. We tried to agree upon who should be Bishop but failed. We adjourned and will have to return.

Hyrum Smith writes to Brigham Young and explains the recent great excitement around Nauvoo with the mass meetings by mobs drawing up resolutions to "utterly exterminate the Saints." He recommends that the Twelve return without delay and advises, "A word to the wise is sufficient; and a little powder, lead and a good rifle can be packed in your luggage very easy without creating any suspicion."
Joseph and 15 others are arrested on this day on the charge of "riot." They appear before Daniel H. Wells (who will later be baptized) and are discharged. Stephen Markham brings warning that mobs are joining together all around Nauvoo in preparation to attack. Joseph notifies both the police and the Nauvoo Legion to be prepared. He hears a rumor that the Law brothers will try to burn the Nauvoo Neighbor office this night, so a strong police force is placed on the premise.

[Letter from (Uncle) Jessee to Hyrum Smith] ... [Joseph Smith] says this is my god which brought me out of the land of Vermont--if it be a gold book discovered by the necromancy of infidelity, & dug from the mines of atheism, he writes that the angel of the Lord has revealed to him the hidden treasures of wisdom & knowledge, even divine revelation, which has lain in the bowels of the earth for thousands of years is at last made known to him, he says he has eyes to see things that are not, and then has the audacity to say they are; and the angel of the Lord (Devil it should be) has put me in possession of great wealth, gold & silver and precious stones so that I shall have the dominion in all the land of Palmyra.
...[Samual] says your father has a wand or rod like Jannes & Jambres who withstood Moses in Egypt --that he can tell the distance from India to Ethiopia &c another fool story, many other things alike ridiculous.
You state your Father cannot write by reason of a nervous affection this is a poor excuse, worse than none, he can dictate to others and they can write, he can If he knows not what to write, he can get your Brother's spectacles he would then be as able to write dictate a letter, as Joe is to decypher hieroglyphics, if more should be wanting he can employ the same scoundrel of a scribe, and then not only the matter but manner and style would be correct. ...

President [N. Eldon] Tanner presented the request of Elder Theodore M. Burton [of ] the Genealogical Department for instructions in the matter of sealing living persons by proxy as in cases where the living person is mentally or physically so incapacitated that he cannot come to the Temple for the ordinances, and also in cases where the mental age is not determined. He reviewed the ruling that when a person is not physically or mentally able to go to the Temple the work may be done by proxy. Problems included are: Who decides whether the mental age is eight years or over? The Genealogical Department has been informed that a competent physician may determine the mental age and if it is not eight years of age the child is not baptized, but that such a child may be sealed to parents. I directed that each case be considered on its special circumstances.

President John Taylor's secretary records: ". . . after due consideration of the whole case the First Presidency decided that Sister Ellen Clifford be permitted to make her choice as to whether she will be sealed to her first husband Thomas Andrews (dead) or to her second husband John E. Hansen (now living) and in case she chooses to be sealed to Bro. Hansen, that Bro. Hansen be instructed to do all in his power in behalf of Bro. Andrews in obtaining Endowments for him, and it is also suggested that he and Sister Hansen have some woman sealed to Bro. Andrews and also have the children and Bro. Andrews adopted into their family."

I will preach on the plurality of Gods. * * *
Our text says, "And hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father." * * * My object was to preach the scriptures, and preach the doctrine they contain, there being a God above, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. * * *
Eloheim is from the word Eloi, God, in the singular number; and by adding the word heim, it renders it Gods. It read first, "In the beginning the head of the Gods brought forth the Gods," or, as others have translated it, "The head of the Gods called the Gods together." * * *
The head God organized the heavens and the earth. In the beginning the heads of the Gods organized the heavens and the earth. * * * The head one of the Gods said, Let us make a man in our own image. I once asked a learned Jew, "If the Hebrew language compels us to render all words ending in heim in the plural, why not render the first Eloheim plural?" He replied, "That is the rule with few exceptions; but in this case it would ruin the Bible." He acknowledged I was right. * * *
In the very beginning the Bible shows there is a plurality of Gods beyond the power of refutation. It is a great subject I am dwelling on. The word Eloheim ought to be in the plural all the way through---Gods. The heads of the Gods appointed one God for us; and when you take that view of the subject, it sets one free to see all the beauty, holiness and perfections of the Gods.

The fact was communicated to me [Joseph Smith], and I took occasion to reprove him, and exhort the brethren never to trifle with the promises of God."

[William Clayton Journal] A.M. conversing with Dr. [Joseph] Wakefield and others in the Bar Room, [Joseph Smith] telling a dream concerning his father killing a man who attempted to stab him. He also spoke concerning key words. The g[reat] key word was the first word Adam spoke and is a word of supplication. He found the word by the Urim and Thummim. It is that key word to which the heavens is opened.

Nelda Karen Cotwell of Layton, Utah, is convicted, in Laredo, Texas, of conspiring to illegally bring Mexican infants into the United States and sell them. Following Cotwell's arrest in early February, several reports appeared in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram linking "a growing number of Mormons" to an "international adoption ring." In response, Don LeFevre, director of the LDS church's press relations, issues a statement warning that "privately arranged placement of any children without a licensed agency's sanction is frequently in violation of local or national law. Church officers or members should not be involved in such arrangements."

[David O McKay Diary] This morning at 8 o'clock, met with the Temple Committee, consisting of the Presidency, President Joseph Fielding Smith, Elders Harold B. Lee, and Spencer W. Kimball. I asked Howard McKean to present the proposed plan of preparing the present Temple rooms in the Salt Lake Temple to experiment upon the new plan of presenting the ordinances by use of screen and visual aids. It was decided that we can use the Assembly Room in the Temple to set up a stage to make the experiment without making important changes in the present rooms.
