[John Nuttle Diary] confined to my bed several of the Saints called in to see me. received letters from Bps. Chamberlain and Leithead of Long Valley. I. I. Adams Sherriff of Iron Co called on Me for assistance in the Capture of one Wallace Wilkinson escaped from Provo Jail. requesting me from Sheriff John W Turner of Provo to send some men to Lee's Ferry & the Ute crossing in the Colorado River to intercept the prisoner if he attempts to pass that way..

  1. This entry needs to be rechecked for accuracy. LJN's diaries did not begin until June 1879, and Apr.26, 1877 was a Thursday.

    1. My copy of Nuttle's diaries (and excerpts) range from December 1876 to April 1892. You are right about this inaccuracy. I'll recheck the Nuttle entries for accuracy.

  2. It is August,26, 1877. Here are additional entries providing some context for his illness:

    Fri Aug 24. Bro A Frost and myself commenced on the United Order Wheat Binn. in the afternoon assisted by W. J. McAllister. but I found I could not continue as I did not feel well - went home & laid down - about 5 P. M I was taken with a pain in my bowels, wife applied a Mustard plaster. called on Bros W.D Johnson Jr & J L Bunting to anoint me & lay on hands. felt some easier Afterwards a pain came in back between shoulder blades Applied Mustard plaster & took an emetic. found by this time I had the bilious colic. the brethren again administered to me sent for Bro Oliphant. who after anointing me again proceeded to apply hot cloths to my bowels & back & continued until 4 A.M when I got ease & a little sleep being now quite weak & feeble
    Sat 25 confined to my bed very weak but little pain.

    Mon 27. Sent a request by Bro Adams to Bro Sextus E. Johnson for him to take 2 other Men & go to Lee's Ferry & the Ute Crossing Stanley Davis from Sevier co also on the same business called on me & stayed all day expecting sheriff Turner from St George. At 4 P.M. A.P. Hardy & Peter Huntsman

  3. I've re-cataloged the Nuttle diaries -- hopefully eliminating most of the problems. Interestingly, the Signature CD ROM containing the diaries has problems. Some month headings are followed by partial, undated entries, as well as preceded by incomplete entries. I've eliminated some of these partial entries -- or added ellipsis to them -- or have have supplied best-guess date (and noted such estimates).
