Brothers Willard and Richard W. Young called and submitted a draft of a deed for the proposed university. We approved of it. There was some discussion concerning the name. They both favored calling the university 'Young University'. President [Wilford] Woodruff, Brother [Francis M.] Lyman and myself thought that would be a very good name. Brothers Lorenzo Snow and Jos[eph]. F. Smith did not seem to favor that name. They thought 'Brigham Young University' would be better. Brother [Heber J.] Grant did not express himself fully, though I rather think he favored the latter. The two points in my mind which made me favor calling it the 'Young University' are that the heirs seem to desire that name, and the name 'Brigham Young' is applied already to the college at Logan [Utah] and the academy at Provo [Utah], and the tendency would be instead of calling it 'Brigham Young University,' to call it the B.Y. University.

  1. It should be changed to Karl Maeser University. The nickname would be the Maeser Lasers.

  2. Apr 17, 1896 The Board of Trustees of the Young University having been disorganized by the resignation of the Trustees, with the exception of three of the number, and arrangements having been made for the L.D.S. College of the Salt Lake Stake of Zion to occupy the ground designated for a College on the 18th Ward Square, it was decided that the Boards of the two institutions should be consolidated, and the following names for the new Board were presented to the First Presidency and approved, namely, Willard Young (Chairman), LeGrand Young, Spencer Clawson (these three of the Young University Board), John Nicholson, William A. Rossiter, William B. Dougall, and Geo[rge]. H. Taylor (of the L.D.S. College Board). A meeting of the Literary and Scientific Association Board was held today, President Geo[rge]. Q. Cannon, F[ranklin]. S. Richards, James Jack and John Q. Cannon present. The subject of selling the old Council House corner to the Pacific Improvement Company to erect thereupon a four or five story building, with a lease of the upper story for ninety-nine years to the association, was favorably considered.
