180 years ago today - 1837 Summer

He [David Whitmer] arrived in Kirtland during the summer of 1837 . . . David . . . was not altogether satisfied with all things and in one instance while conversing with Joseph, David, while this spirit was upon him, insulted Joseph and he slaped David in the face and kicked him out of the yard and it had a good effect and brought David to his senses.

the link (? original source) has David W. Patten. Why do you think this was David Whitmer?

Compare Wilford Woodruff's Journal entry for June 25, 1857 with DIALOGUE Journal article Vol.16, No.2 (Summer 1983) article on Wm. Smith by Irene M. Bates, p.14, which has the exact quote above plus "Their was a great aposticy in the church about those days."

the straw that broke the camel's back for David Whitmer. He left and never came back.

  4. Yes, it was David Patten. Whitmer had left the church by this point in time. Thanks for the clarification.
