The First Presidency and Twelve agre to alter the temple undergarment worn outside the temple: "buttons instead of strings; no collar; sleeves above the elbow and a few inches below the knee and a change in the crotch so as to cover the same." Mormons regard this as a dramatic change from the endowment garment introduced by Joseph Smith. Few realize that the traditional Utah "garment" is based on the "Union suit" of the last half of the nineteenth century, while the earlier garment worn under clothing at Nauvoo was based on legless "shirt" or two-piece undergarment which was current in America from the late-eighteenth century to the 1840s.
