Salt Lake City, Utah, January 4th, 1907. Senator Reed Smoot, Washington, D.C.

Dear Senator:

This in part is an answer to a telegram received from you, going to show the inaccuracy of the statement of Senator Burrows to the effect that a Mormon ecclesiastic's asking permission to run for public office is tantamount to his winning at the polls.

Apostle Anthon H. Lund ran for the Legislature as a Republican in 1891, and was beaten by his Democratic opponent, Peter Greaves. Both lived in the same town of Ephraim.

Ed. Callister undertook to supply you with two other cases which he thought would cover the whole ground. He is not in town today, will be home tomorrow when I will remind him of this.

Yours, &c., GEO. F. GIBBS

P. S. There are no doubt many other cases, but I have no means of ascertaining them.
