This is not correct. The plates were wrapped in clothes & hid in the shop loft in a quantity of flax. The nailed up empty box in which they were hid was put under the shop floor as a diversion. According to Elden Watson, the plates were moved from the floor to the loft on November 4th.
According to Dan Vogel, between September 24th and 30th, he hid "the plates across the road in the cooper's shop. During the night the box is found and destroyed by enemies. Smith explains that he had removed plates from the box and placed them in the loft. Lucy Smith says that this event occurred "a few days after" Joseph brought the plates home, and Martin Harris says it was before 1 October."
