[Wilford Woodruff] I Blessed Mother Barry 82 years old. She had 3 sons & 1 daughter Martered 2 sons & 1 Daughter by Indian and 1 Son in Tennessee martered By Christians for preaching the gospel.

The son, who was killed by sectarians on Aug.10,1884 near Cane Creek in Lewis County Tennessee, was William S. Berry. Also shot & killed (during church services) was his fellow missionary John H. Gibbs, and local members Martin Condor, and John Riley Hudson.

ReplyDeletethe misleading missionaries were recruiting the local women (as part of their conversion) to be polygamous wives back in Utah.
ReplyDeletethis was at the height of LDS defiance of federal govt on practice of plural marriage.
