[Apostle John Henry Smith ] At 2 p.m. the funeral of [former Apostle] Moses Thatcher was held in the Tabernacle. The building was filled to suffocation. ... Brigham H. Roberts spoke very intensely and to my mind quite defiantly.

  1. note 13. The Salt Lake Tribune reported on August 27, 1909, that B. H. Roberts shouted at the top of his voice in his talk at the funeral of Moses Thatcher: “You can’t rob him of what he has done. What if he did make mistakes? All human beings make them, but in comparison with the brilliancy of his record for the church, his mistakes sink into insignificance. He bore witness of the truth by suffering. In the days of his sorrow and trouble, men set a price upon his membership in the church and he paid it.”
