Joseph Smith instructs the Quorum of Twelve "to select an exploring company to go to California to select a location for the settlement of the Saints: Jonathan Duhnam, David Fulmer, Phinehas H. Young and David D. Yearsly volunteered to go, and Alphonzo Young, James Emmett, George D. Watt and Daniel Spencer were selected to go."
