[President Heber J. Grant Diary] Henry D. Moyle called and protested regarding an editorial published in the Deseret News reflecting on him and others in connection with the liquidation of the Sugar Banking Co. I had not read the editorial. When I saw it I was annoyed and said 'Joseph is reforming the bankers.' I told Henry I did not even read it when it was first published. Brother Cannon writes some editorials that annoy me. I haven't read many of them lately.

Which Cannon is he referring to?

[President Heber J. Grant Diary] I then met my brother B. F. on the street and walked back to the office with him; had a little chat about the News, told him I thought Joseph J. Cannon would make him a good choice, and he said he didn't know anything about his ability, but that he would be only too happy to put in as editor anybody that the Presdency (sic) thought would make a good one.

[President Heber J. Grant Diary] B. F. Grant called at the office shortly after eight o'clock and I had a long talk with him. He expressed the opinion that Brother Joseph F. Cannon's editorials ought to be gone over before they are published. I told him I did not like his editorial about canceling debts; I thought it reflected on the Chruch (sic). He agreed with me. I hope the directors will take the matter up and see that someone besides Joseph reads his editorials before they are published and save me mixing into the matter.

Cannon had written and submitted for approval, to be published in the Deseret News. We felt it would be a mistake to publish the editorial. It was suggesting what resolutions should be passed by the Republican Convention. ...

[President Heber J. Grant Diary] Council meeting was held at 10:00. At the regular meeting of the Presidency and Apostles this morning after reading a couple of editorials in last night's News, it was voted to release Brother Joseph J. Cannon as the editor of the Deseret News. There was a general discussion about his attempting to discuss financial and other questions that he knows nothing about in the paper. The general feeling was that while he was a good worker and a very intelligent, fine man, that he had not filled the bill. Brother Stephen L. Richards said it was our own fault that he have been talking about Joseph's editorials not being satisfactory, and he said he was ready to make a promotion to release him. And finally, after some discussion, it was decided to do so and to appoint him President of the British Mission I was very glad for this suggestion; it will be a very nice way to promote him.'

[President Heber J. Grant Diary] Then had lunch at Z.C.M.I. and then met with Brother Joseph J. Cannon and explained to him that we had decided to have him preside over the British Mission. We had a long talk regarding his editorial writing for the News. He defended his position and insisted that Brother Ivins had endorsed every editorial that he had written. We told him there were no serious charges but that we did feel we needed a change there and that we were going to try to get along without an editor and that I had felt all the time that I did not want him to step aside until we had some other work to give him that was satisfactory. In my judgment, Brother Cannon will make a very splended (sic) President of the British Mission.
