[Willard Richards]

Fifteen or twenty men were engaged in cutting the ice at the mill dam, there being two layers of ice 28 inches thick and then a layer of snow and ice about a foot thick. They have got to cut through. Soil about three foot solid frozen. ... At 2 p.m., the Twelve and Gents [gentlemen] met to learn to dance in the council house.
