[Brigham Young]

Told this story: A woman, a strong fatalist sent her son for some whiskey, the boy broke the bottle and spilt the whiskey, the woman beat the boy, the boy excused himself by saying it was foreordained; Lorenzo Dow would mention circumstances of this Kind to disprove the Arguments of the fatalists. The Conversation then turned upon the character of Joseph Smith. Br[other] Joseph Young remarked in the days of Joseph I did not sense the greatness of his character. The President remarked he did sense his worth, but very few men did, and he loved him. He said Joseph would be indignant with men that would limit him to what they thought was sufficient for him. Upon one occasion Joseph told Edward Partridge, the Presiding Bishop, that he must not measure his belly. The President remarked, I would make this people rich if they would take my counsel. -- Salt Lake City
