Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon request annual remuneration of $1,100, each. The council gives 80 acre lots to each and grants their salary request. Council member George M. Hinkle "bitterly opposed it, as the Church had always been opposed to a salaried ministry."

Part of this statement is incorrect. See the original source: JSP J1:269-270. According to this source's comments (in note 144.) the request for monetary compensation was opposed by "the members of the church almost to a man" (i.e., unanimously), "and the resolution or request was revoked." This is not included in HC 3: 31-32.
