A Book of Commandments, for the Government of the Church of Christ is published by Joseph Smith in Independence, Missouri. It is never completed, as a mob destroys the W.W. Phelps & Co. print shop, confiscates the printing press and assaults Mormon leaders in Independence, Jackson County. Incomplete copies of the Book of Commandments are still published. The Evening and the Morning Star and the Upper Missouri Advertiser cease publication.
