80 years ago today - Dec 7, 1941

Mervyn Bennion is the first Mormon to die during the U.S. military participation in World War II. As captain of the battleship 'West Virginia,' Bennion is killed on its bridge during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He is the son-in-law of first counselor J. Reuben Clark and receives a posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor.
