Saw Pres[ident]. [Lorenzo] Snow. asked him privately if he could find it in his heart to send that man (pointing to R[eed]. S[moot]. who sat at table writing Jos[eph]. F. S[mith]. Jno [John] H[enry] S[mith] sitting close by). He answered, No, no. I said amen though every fibre in my body said Reed is the man for the Senate.
