[Brigham Young]  I feel as I said to Van Vliet "We calculate to be the kings of these mountains." Now let us go ahead and occupy them.

  1. Sunday. The big question is who is saying this?

  2. It is no stretch of the imagination to guess that it was probably Brigham.

  3. Brigham Young. I'll edit the post to reflect that.

  4. Note: Van Vliet was U.S. Army quartermaster Capt. Stewart Van Vliet.

  5. It would be very interesting to find out what Wilford Woodruff's Journal entry for this day has anything to say on this topic.

The following is a previous threat BY made to SVV as recorded in WW's Journal for 13 Sep. 1857:

"If the Government calls for volunteers in California & the people turn out to come to destroy us they will find their own buildings in flames before they get far from home & so throughout the United States."

  6. Note: Sep.13, 1857 was just 2 days after the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

  7. Woodruff was sick that day and did not attend any meetings. He may not have been in Logan.

Brigham Young's remark came from the minutes of the quorum of twelve for that day as they were discussing further settlement between Logan & Soda Springs and elsewhere.
